Cricket 1897

J u l y 8, 1897. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 273 until he had made 125by excellent cricket, which so greatly pleased the spectators that a collection of over £21 was made for him on the ground. Unfortu nately, no one else except Mr. Lacey, who played well ior 27, could do anything with the bowling, and the total, which promised to be very large, only came to 251. Yorkshire did not begin at all well, but after four wickets had fallen, runs came with rapidity. Wain wright batted splendidly for 118 not out, and Moor house for 66, while Hirst also did well. But the total only exceeded that of Hampshire by 42. In their second innings Hampshire put on 112 for five wickets before stumps were drawn on Tuesday, Captain Wynyard, Mr. Robson, and Mr. Lacey having played excellent cricket without meeting with much assistance. Mr. Lacey increased his score to 58 on Wednesday, but the tail did nothing, and Yorkshire only had to make 138 runs to win. Brown and Tunnicliffe proceeded to knock these off without losing a wicket. The bad luck which has followed Derbyshire this year seemed to have left them when they won the toss in this match and made a fine score, thanks to wonderfully good cricket by Chatterton and Mr. Evershed, who only just missed making their hundred, and very useful innings by Storer, Walter Sugg, Bostock and Cross. Although Notts lost Shrewsbury and Mr. Jones for a few runs. Mr. Dixon was in his best form and made 59, while Gunn batted as well as ever in putting together the fine score of 152. Dench also did exceedingly well. There was never much chance of finishing the match on Wednesday. D erbysh ire . First innings. Second innings. S. H.
