Cricket 1897

J u l y 8, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 265 instance I know of four century stands in one innings in a first-class match, is Surrey v. Sussex at the Oval in 1888, when the figures were: Runs. Wkts. Batsmen. 161 ...1 .. Abel and J. Shuter. 193 ...4 ... K. J. Key and W . W. Read. 127 ...6 ... M. P. Bowden and W . W. Read. 116 ...7 ... M. P. Bowden and Henderson Here, it will be seen, Mr. Read and Mr. Bowden each took part in two of the long partnerships. Other instances like that in the Notts v. Kent match, where six different batsmen shared in the honour, are :—York shire v. Somerset, at Taunton, in 1893, Mr. 861161*8 and Tunnicliffe, Brown and Peel, TTlyett and Wainwright, being the three pairs ; England v. Australia, Oval, 1893, W. G. and Stoddart, Shrewsbury and Albert Ward, W. W. and Jackson ; Australians v. Universities Past and Present (record score match), Portsmouth, 1893, Bannerman and Graham, Bruce and Trumble, Walter Giffen and Turner. I cannot at the present moment trace any other besides these ; and it is cer tainly singular that they should all have been in one season. Twenty-nine centuries were made in first- class cricket in May this year, twenty-five in June. So far Abel heads the list with four, Ranjitsinhji and N. F. Druce having made three each. Each of these batsmen is credited with a score of over 200. The following “ centurions” have never been in the list of any previous year: —P. F. Warner (two), H. C. Stewart, A. Eccles, Knight, G. L. Jessop, Attewell, J. F. Byrne, 0. J. B. Wood, H. B. Chinnery, G. E. Bromley- Martin, and Major Spens. Writing Mr. Byrne’s name reminds me of a search I made a few days ago to see what the International full-back had done in his previous few appearances for Warwickshire, to whose ranks his accession certainly adds strength. The only year in which I can find his name in the county averages is 1892, when he appears to have played five innings (once not out) for 42, and to have taken one wicket for 61 runs. Mr. E. J. Byrne played against the Australians in 1888, scoring 4 and 4. Is this a mistake for Mr. J. F., or was it an elder brother ? J. N. P. FOREST H IL L v. BRIXTON WANDERERS.— Played at Forest Hill.
