Cricket 1897
J uly 1, 1897. CRICKET: A^WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 255 SLC.C. AND GROUND v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. Played at Lord’s on June 28 and 29. Cambridge won by 102 runs. During the greater part of the game the bowlers held the upper hand, and it was only for a time while Cambridge were batting in the second innings, Mil l while Mr. Wright and Gunn were together in the first innings of the M.C.C., that the batsmen made much of a show. It was generally thought that Cam - bri Ige had not done badly when they ended their first innings for 158, for the bowlers were evidently very difficult to play. Mr, N. F. Druce played a wonder fully pood innings of 74—i^. was as nearly perfect as ■ coull wish to see—and Mr. Stcgdon deserved well of his side by making a stand with Mr. Druce when it w is very badly w an'ei. Mr. Curgenven, the Derby shire amateur, carried his bat for 20—a very useful irviings. After Alec Heirne had been disposed of for tw», the Cambridge bowlers found that Gunn and Mr. Wright were not to be easily parted. They did not score very fast, but on the other hand, their bat ting was very good, and both made some remarkably g o d strokes; in fact, when they had each made about a dozen, they made the bowling look very ea*y. At last, when 53 was up, Mr. Fernie was put on, and at once the style of play was altered. From his first over he was successful in keeping the batsmen very quiet, and they had the greatest difficulty in tim :ng him. Mr. Shine went on at the other end and made the ball get up a good deal, but he never seemed to inconvenience either batsman. A t last, with a rather f tster ball than usual, Mr. Fernie beat Mr. Wright, and just knocked off a bail. Soon afterwards a very good and very pretty catch at mid-on by Mr. De Zoete off a hard drive ended Gunn’s innings, and thereafter the bowlers had matters nearly all their own way. The Cimbridge fielding was not altogether perfect, especially in picking up, but some of it, more particu larly by Mr. Burnup (who had very little to do) and Mr. Jessop (at cover-point) was of the best. With a lead of two runs, Cambridge did very well in their second innings. Mr. Druce again played beautiful cricket, and he was greatly aided by Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Marriott, Mr. Jessop (who knocked up 31 in a very short time by vigorous and somewhat promis cuous hitting), Mr. Stogdon, and Mr. E. A. C. Druce. Except for another good innings by Mr. Wright, and 20 by Attewell, who hardly shaped like a man who has recently been making big scores, the M.C.C. inn ings was not at all remarkable, and the University won very easily. M.C.C. won hy an innings and 18 runs. One looks in vain among the names of the mm who represented M.C.C. for a man who has made any reputation whatever as a bat in first-class cricket, except O’ Halloran and Roche, who have certainly not done very much while they have been in England. But the side was powerful tnough to put on 16 > against the Hampshire bowling after the home team had been dismissed for 112. For Hampshire Barton played good cricket for 51, and Andrews, a local player, made a promising appearance. Webb wns run out at the very beginning of the match by a ball driven back to his wicket by Mr. Bennett; which w h s unf. rtunate. It must be owned that most of the M.C C. team made about as many runs as might have been expected of them—that is to say, nine of them put on 47 between them. But Mr. It. William-* and O’Halloran made a big strnd for the second wicket, the former scoring 60, and the latter 52. Hampshire had to go in ag«in after a lot of rnin had fallen. They made 35 against Geeson and Roche. H am pshire . First innings. R. A.
