Cricket 1897
J u ly 1, 1897'. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 251 ESSEX v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Southampton on June 24, 25and 26. Essex won by an innings and 87 runs. W ith a weak team Hampshire had little chance of beating Essex under any circumstances, and as the luck was entirely against them, a defeat was a certainty. The loss of the toss and the very heavy rain on Thursday night, quite settled the matter. The Essex batting was very sound, and Carpenter, Mr. McGahey, and Mr. Lucas greatly distinguished themselves. On a most difficult wicket Hampshire could, of course, do very little, but Barton, Mr. Hill, Mr. Robson, and Mr. Bennett played excellent cricket. E ssex . H. G. Owen,b Webb... C. J. Gloucestershire were altogether outplayed in this match, and their batting was decidedly weak. In fact, only two men played up to their reputation, Mr. Champain and W . G. The former, who is a great acquisition to the team, played splendid cricket for 97 in the first innings, but stood almost alone. In the second, W .G . was in great form. Ward, Frank Sugg, and Baker were all seen at their best when Lancashire batted, and several other men did well. G loucestershire . W . G. Grace, c Hornby, b Cuttell......................... ... This was a bowlers’ match, and the only time that the wicket was at all easy was when Winchester began their second innings. The only two batsmen who made anything like a large score were Noel and Lewin for Winchester. Of the bowlers, Rpbarts for Eton, and Joy and Stevens for Winchester will be able to look back upon the match with very great pleasure. W inchester . First innings. E. B.
