Cricket 1897

J une 24, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 235 LANCASHIRE y . SURREY. Played at Old Trafford on June 17, 18 and 19. Surrey won by an innings and 24 runs. Without a doubt the winning of the toss in this match influenced the result immensely, for Surrey were able to bat on a wet wicket, while Lancashire had their turn on awicket greatly in favour of the bowlers. Lancashire put themselves out of the running on the first day by loosing fivewickets for 43. after Surrey had made 301, but when they went in the wicket had dried to some extent, and the bowlers had not the disadvantage of a wet ball. Baldwin for Surrey onlymissed his hundred by 7; he is in fine form at present. Abel, who hasnot b‘>en seenat his best for a week or two, played excellentcricket for 68 and Brockwell, Lees and Mr. Chinijery did well. Mold bowled finely. The downfall of the Lancashire wickets in the evening came as a surprise, andBaker, who carried his bat for 24. alone seemed able to cope with the bowling. No play was possible on the second day, andon Saturday Lancashire could hardly hope for anything but a draw, with very little chance of making it. Biker increased his scoreby very good cricket to 64, but the tail could do nothing against Hayward and Richardson, who, except for one over, were unchanged. In the follow on, several men, notably Tyldesley, Briggs, Smith and Hallam, made a great effortto save the inningsdefeat, but Richardson and Hayward again proved themselves equal to the occasion.
