Cricket 1897
Jun e 24, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 233 ago as 1884 made a score of 84 against Australian bowling. There are comparatively very few men with any particular reputation as batsmen who have never scored three figures. Among them are Rawlin, Mounsey, Mr. F. W . Milligan, Wrathal, Mr. S. A. P. Kitcat, Mr. R. W . Rice, Mr. L. G. Wright, Mr. H. D. G. Leveson-Gower, Mr. C. E. M. Wilson, Law and A. E. Trott. Of course, I refer to first-class cricket only; most, if not all, of these have played three-figure innings in minor games. Close finishes have been very frequent this season. Three matches have been won by one wicket only ; and Derbyshire has had the hard luck to participate, as the losing side, in two of the three. As the annals of first-class cricket for the last twenty years have only some half-score other instances of matches won by a wicket, it may be gathered that Derbyshire’ s record in this respect is probably unprecedented. Its peculiar nature is inten sified by the fact that in another game this season the county lost bjr only two wickets. It must be some slight comfort for the men of the Peak County to reflect that this sort of thing cannot go on much longer ; if they are good enough to run such sides as Lancashire and Yorkshire to a wicket they must surely win a game before long. Here are some other instances of matches won and lost by a wicket only, the winning side being in each case placed first. Notts v. Australians, at Trent Bridge, 1880. Notts v. M.C.C., at Lord’s, 1882. Surrey v. Lancashire, at the Oval, 1885. Surrey v. Sussex, at Brighton, 1887. Somerset v. Sussex, at Brighton, 1894. Oxford U. v. Somerset, at Oxford, 1895. Leicester v. Warwick, at Leicester, 1896. Derbyshire v. M.C.C., at Lord’s, 1896. Gentlemen v. Players, at the Oval, 1896. No one, as far as I have seen, has remarked on the curious fact that Sussex’s one-wicket victory over Somerset this year is an exact reversal of the result of the game at Brighton between the two counties three years ago. Then Sussex scored 1*29 and 124 ; Somerset 122 and 132 for nine; the Rev. A. P.Wickham (5), and Westcott (0) being the not-out men. Mr. W . L. Murdoch was the best man for Sussex, with 31 and 42 ; with 25 and 35, he was again highest scorer for his side this year. Eight of the players on the Sussex side were the same, but only five on that of Somerset. A curious parallel of this is afforded by the matches between Surrey and the M.C.C. at the Oval in 1871 and 1873. In 1871, Surrey, with 352, largely the result of a long stand by Pooley and Jem Southerton, and 111 for nine, to M.C.C.’s 245 and 217 (W.G., 145 in the first innings), just scraped home. The 1873 match was a small-scoring one, and the premier club just managed to reverse the result, thus having revenge after two years’ waiting. Sussex had to wait three years. J.N.P.
