Cricket 1897
,230 CKICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF TIIE XJA ME. J une 24, 1897. “ Are there any men who hit you about more than others \ ” “ I never liked bowling to Maurice Read; he used to hit them back to me with such tremendous force. Once he drove back a ball which hit me on the arm, took the skin right off, rattled against the pavilion, and re bounded half way to the pitch. Mr. F. G. J. Ford clumps me about more than 1 like, but Maurice Read was the only man who ever really frightened me by driving the ball back.” “ How did you come into notice ? ” “ I went to live at Hailsham in Sussex and played for the village cricket club. While there 1 accepted an engagement as professional to Mr. Qnintin Hogg, the gentleman who has so much to do with the Polytechnic. Mr. Hogg was kind enough to speak of me to the Hon. Thomas Pelham who wrote about me to the secretary of the Sussex county cricket club, with the result that two years before I played for Gloucestershire I appeared as a Sussex colt at Brighton. The papers spoke well of my bowling. Then I placed tor the Sussex Club and Ground against the West of Scotland who were making a tour in Sussex—the tour in which Mr. J. S. Cairick scored over 400 again&t the Priory Park, Chichester. But by going to Mr. Quintin Hogg 1 had broken my qualification for Sussex, and so when this was discovered 1 was not asked to play again.” Did you play in any matches while you were with Mr. Quintin Hogg, or did you only howl at practice ? ” ‘ * I played in a lot of matches for him. He had a country seat near Southampton, and I played in a lot of cricket matches in the neighbourhood. In one of the matches I was bowling to a gentleman named Ottaway. I was bowling very fast, and presently a ball kicked and cut a piece clean out of his moustache. It was a very odd occurrence, but I suppose that the ball had a lot of spin upon it, I have never seen Mr. Ottaway from that day until this very morning when I met him by chance. After the match of which 1 have been speaking, somebody put up a stump for me to bowl at, and with the third ball I broke it in halves.” “ When did Gloucestershire find you out ? ” “ While I was in Sussex, Mr. G. N. Wyatt, who was then playing in the county eleven, said that he would write to Mr. Grace about me; but he forgot to do so until the follow ing year. Then W . G. had me to bowl to him at the Oval before one of the Gentlemen and Players’ matches, and 1 suppose I must have satisfied him, for shortly afterwards I had a telegram from him, on the day before the match against Yorkshire, to go to Dews- _bury. Here I took seven wickets in each innings, and from that time I have played pretty regularly for Gloucestershire. This is my eleventh season with the county.” “ Have you played much cricket for Dr. E. M. Grace?” “ I always play for him when I can. I lvmember playing against Bedminster in one of the Thornbury matches. We batted first, and only made 66 . Murch and I began the bowling for Thornbury, and I was getting tickets pretty fast. It was a very hot day, uni Mr. E. M. sent for a glass of whisky for me. Strange to say I did the hat trick with the next three balls. This pleased the Doctor so much that he told me to go to his bag and take the best silk cap I could find. We won the match very easily. At another time I was playing for Mr. E. M. in a match in Wales. Before the captain had tossed Mr. Grace and I went to look at the wickets, and wo found that one end was very wet and the other end very hard. .Now tho club had a very fast bowler and a slow one. So Mr. Grace went to the captain and told him about the wicket, but the captain assured him that it was a mistake. We lost the toss, and they promptly said that we were to go in. But Mr. Grace pointed out to them that they were giving themselves away, and said, ‘ I won’t go in. You must go in yourselves.’ They went in, and we won very easily indeed. But that was a long time ago.” “ What do you think of the prospects of Gloucestershire this year ? ” “ I think that when we get our full strength we shall have the strongest team since the time that all the Graces played. We have some of the best amateurs in England. As for fielding, I don’t think that there is a team which can beat us. The Doctor is batting as well as ever, and I never wish to see better generalship than he showed in the Surrey match at the Oval. The way in which he handled the team and exercised his j udgment was perfect. W . A. B e tte s w o iith . DULWICH v. SPENCER.—Played at Wandsworth onMay 29. S p e n c e r . H. W.
