Cricket 1897

J une 17, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 223 MIDDLESEX v. NOTTS. Played at Lords on June 14 15 and 16. Drawn. Notts seemed to have a great advantage in winning the toss, but they can hardly be said to have made thebest use of it. Some verypretty batting wasseen while Shrewsbury and Gunn, who both shewed some of their old form, were together, but the Notts men seemedoverpowered by asenseof their responsibility andthe game lagged considerably. Middlesex had a little more than an hour’s batting, but losing Mr. Stoddart and Mr. Hayman very quickly, they also seemedoverpowered byasenseof their responsibility, and runs were few and far between. On Tuesday, however, a very different stateof things was seen, for after Rawlin went for a patient 33, Mr. Ford gave a very interesting display of the very hardest hitting, while Mr. Warner played scientific cricket without beingtedious. AfterMr. Fordwentfor77— abrilliant innings—it appeared likely that the Nottstotalwould not be greatly exceeded, and it was not until J. T. Hearne came in that any further stand wasmade. But Hearne, who can hit when he choosesjto do so, wisely contented himself with playing a moderately steady game, whileMr. Warner still continued to bat well, and in the end the total was brought to 375, giving Middlesex the commanding lead of 173. Mr. Warner’sbrilliant innings came to a closewhen he seemed certain to carry his bat. His 176 was the highest and perhaps the best innings he has ever p'ayed. Shrewsbury and Mr. Jones put on 74 for Notts without losing a wicket, so that their county began on Wednesdaywith a deficit of only 99 instead of 173. There was never any prospect of a finish on Wednesday. N o tts . A. O.
