Cricket 1897

220 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 17, 1897. that the spectators relieved their pent-up feelings by loud applause when, at last. Mr. Warner altered the appearance of the scoring"board by making a single. M r. J e s s o p ’ s innings of 140 against the Philadelphians was remarkable. J only lasted for 95 minutes ; it included two 6 ’s, one 5 and 21 fours; the last 81 runs (that is to say the runs made on Tuesday morning) were pub together in 40 minutes <ff 14 overs out of a total of 90; in one over of K in g’s he made 18, and in one of B iil^ ’s three fours and a three off successive b ills. Since his arriv il in England, M r. A. B. Tancred, admittedly the best bats'iian of South Africa, has played two matches. W ithout any preliminary practice what ever, except half-a-dozjn balls just before the game began he made 40 on a sticky wicket for M.C.C ag linst Dulwich C »llege and in the other match, M C C against. Derbyshire, his scores were 19 and 4. He was run out in the first innings when com fortably set. He hopes to be in England till September, and if he has the opportunity of playing in a good many matches, some big scores m aybe expected from him. W ith reference to a paragraph which appeared in last week’s “ Gossip,” Mr. Ernest T. Lloyd, the hororary secretary o f the Granville C.C., writes to sty that the n c-ball bowled in the match between Granville and Goddington, when the last Goddington man was in with one run to tie, was really a no-ball, and not due to the presence of mind of the umpire* The two Granville men, who were in a position to see, are satisfied that the umpire was right. Moreover, the same bowler had previously been no-balled. I am glad to be able to give this explanation by Mr. Lloyd, wh > thinks that the expression “ presence of m in d ” in the paragraph may be applied to the Goddington umpire, but it is hardly necessary to say that the expression did not ay ply, and was not for a moment intended to apply, to any umpire in particular, and certainly not to the Goddington umpire, whose decisions are always recognised as fair. T he Tonbridge Cricket Week, always attractive, begins on Monday next, the matches being Kent v. Sussex and Kent v. Middlesex. As will be seen from our advertisement columns the Week will be made as interesting as possible to visitors, while the Suuth Eastern Railway are issuing cheap return tickets at the piice of a single fare.
