Grorresjpon&enre. ----- To the Editor of C r ic k e t . Yarrow-on-Tjne. January 18th, 1897. S ir . —Your anonymous correspondent who underrates Mr. W. G. Grace’s cricket because there are boundaries now-a-days, ought to know, since he is a] laudator tempoirs acti, that Mr. Grace established his name as the greatest batsman that ever lived at a time when there were no boundaries. I have often wished some one would or could give dates in your paper of the introduction of boundaries on the different grounds. Before 1880, I do not think there were any boundaries (except the Pavilion) at Lord’s and the Oval. Your correspondent ought to know that in W. G.’s great years of 1871, 1873 and 1876 there were n6c boundaries, that the grounds were not all perfection, and that on very bad grounds W. G. has done things which no other man—from Fuller Pilch to Ranjitsinhji — has approached. Moreover, I have noticed W.G’s scores contain a greater number of hits for 3 than other men’s. Your corres pondent, more shame to V'na, is evidently an anti-Graceite. Let him stick to bumble-puppy.—Yours faiihfully, HAROLD A. TATE. SOUTH HAMPSTEAD.
