Cricket 1897

J une 10, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 197 Tip to date (June 7) his total achievements in first-class cricket may be summarised thus : Not Hghst Inns. out. runs. aver, scores For' Cambridge University 52 3 1235 23-16 191 „ Middlesex .............. 99 4 2276 23’95 150 Otherfirat-classmatches in England ..................... 27 2 405 1620 111* First - class matches in Australia..................... 20 1 508 2673 106 Total i 10 4424 2353 Besides the two schoolboy scores of 200, recorded in an early paragraph, Mr. Ford, twice in the year 1893, played an innings of over 200 in minor cricket, making 204, not out, for Incogniti v. Trinity College, Oxford, and 240 for Mr. Scott-Holme’s XL v. Mr. H. S. Jones’s XI. In the same season, in which he was in marvellous run-getting form, he placed his name on the list of those who have scored two centuries in a match, making 162 and 108, not out, for Eastbourne v. Hurst Park ; and he also scored in 1893 175, not out. for Old Reptonians v. Warwickshire Club and Ground, 108 for Eastbourne v. Mr. E. Brown’s X I., and 107 for M.C.C. v. Bedfordshire. Mr. F. S. Ashley-Cooper writes me that the number of runs put on by Mr. Dixon and Dench at Nottingham, in the Sussex match, was 113, not 111. He says also that Hirst and Wainwright put on 185, not 175 for Yorkshire v. Gloucestershire. I am not sure about this, but I take it that this would be cor rect, and that the number put on was 185. One of the most noticeable features of the yet young season has been the number of players absolutely new to first-class cricket who have appeared in the big elevens, of course with varying success. I don’t allude to men like Coe, Cuttell, Mr. C. J. B. Wood, and Mason, of Notts, who have appeared a few times before, or even to such as Mr. A. Eccles, who had an innings for Oxford in 1896, but to men absolutely new to English first-class cricket. There must be quite thirty. 1 believe that all of these may be included in the list:—Dench (Notts), Han cock, Warren, Wilmott, Cross, Mr. Ashcroft, and Houseman (Derby), Cobley and Smith (Leicester), Gill (Somerset), Mr. F. Weaver (Glos.), Bland (Sussex), Mr. T. Caplen, Mr. H. H. Harington, and Hunt (Kent), Roche, O’Halloran, Thompson, Hon. J. Tufton, Mr. «T. Gifford, Mr. C. Wigram, and Capt. B. V. Wentworth (M.C.C.), Messrs. II. W . De Zoete, E. A. Kidman, L. J. Moon, A. E. Fernie, and T. L. Taylor (Cambridge), Messrs. R. E. Foster, G. E. Bromley-Maitin, F. B. Henderson, and A. S. Crawley (Oxford). There are thirty, and I am not quite sure that the list is complete. J. N. P. CLAPTON v. PADDINGTON.- on May 27. P addington . Played at Clapton Cuscort, c Bishop, Britton ........
