In 1869 Dr. Grace became a member of the M.C.C. and played his first innings for Ihe old club at Oxford against the University, when he made 117 in his first and only innings. Since then he has played in no less than one hundred and ten matches for it, and has, during twenty-eight years scored close upon seven thousand runs and gained an average of 39*13. His highest score is 344, which number he made in 1876 in his second inniDga againf-t Kent at Canterbury, whilst he has played three- figure innings no less than nineteen times. He has suc­ ceeded in reaching three figures against Kent six times, against Surrey and Cam­ bridge University three times each, twice against Nottingham and Oxford Univer­ sity, and once against the Australian team of 1884 and Yorkshire. The inn­ ings of 344 which he played against Kent in 1876 is his record score in first-class matches, and took him six hours and twenty minutes to make. SOUTH. The first meeting between teams repre­ senting the South and the North was as long ago as 1836, at Lord’s, when the North were victorious. All celebrate I players from the days of Fuller Pilch and “ kind and manly” Alfred Mynn down to the present time have taken part in these matches. Dr. Grace first played for the South in 1866, and has played for it almost every year since. On an average he has played in two or three matches every season, but in 1875 he played in as many as seven, whilst he took part in five in the years 1872, 1873, and 1876.
