Cricket 1897
J une 3, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 189 for a few days before the match thewicket did not help thebowlersasmuchasmight havebeenexpected, and the result was that Kent made a fairly good total. Alec. Hearne played a fine innings and Mr. Marchant was just getting well set when hewas run ont. A surprisingly good stand was made for the eighth wicket by Easby and Wright, who put on no less than 78runs, bringing the total from 137 to 2lfi, Notts, had three-quarters of an hour’sbatting, and lost Shrewsbury and Mr. Jones for 34. On Tuesday theground was almost under water but in the after noon a start was made. The bowlers could obtain no foothold, and the ball cut through. Gunn became well set and gave thefield plenty to do. At close of play he was still in with 62 to his credit, and the only wicket which had fallen was that of Mr. Dixon, who had made 30. Daft was not out 21. This good beginning was hardly kept up yesterday, but Daft increasedhis score to 63, and Notts had a lead of. 12 on the first innings. Kent did pretty well in their secondinnings. K e n t . First innings. J. R. Rain interfered sadly with this match, and no play was possible on the second day. The bowlers had much the best of matters, and the only batsmen who distinguished themselves were Frank Sugg, Tyldesley, S. M. Tindall, A. E. Stoddart and F. G. J. Ford. Perhaps the best performance in thematch was the fine bowling of Phillips in the first innings of Lancashire. 9 L a n c a s h ir e . First innings. Ward (A.), b Heame ... Paul, b Hearne ........ DERBYSHIRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Derby on May 31, June 1 and 2. Drawn. During the whole of Mondty the Derbyshire mea were batting for 263runs, and the cricket was seldom very attractive. Davidson made 40, Bagshaw 4J, and Chatterton, 35; but the best cricket of the day was seenwhenWalter Suggjoined Mr. MaynardAshcroft, who made his first appearance in first-class cricket against Surrey. Sugg, as usual, when he gets set, played a very taking game, and Mr. Ashcroft showed that he is likely to be a decided acquisition to the Derbyshire team. His innings of 50, not out, can hardly be praised too highly. Sugg made 44 and pleased everybody. On Tuesday rain prevented any play, and yesterday there was not time to finish the game.
