Cricket 1897

M ay 27, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 165 be no difference of opinion. No otter player, saveW.G. andArthur Shrewsbury, can show such a record, though I admit that the Indian Prince’s beating it is only a matter of time. Abel, the latest god of the Surrey crowd’s idolatory (and, mind you, I thick Abel a really great player, and fully worthy the popularity he has achieved), is still a long way off equalling it, while hehas reached the age at which most men are held veterans. Abel was 37 last 30th of November; and his wonderful scoring of this season may fairly be put to the credit of the veteran brigade. So may Mr. Key’s consistently fine form; W .W .’s 62, 45 and 86*; William Chatterton’s 79 and 59 ; Mr. A. P. Lucas’s 59* and 57*; Lord Hawke’s 63* and 55; Peel’s 45 in a match of com paratively small scores the other day; Shrewsbury’s 56 ; Mr. Murdoch’s 44, 51, 46 and 72 ; W .G.’s 55 ; and Mr. Dixon’s 268.* I WTite from memory, but I be lieve I am correct in saying that not one of these men is under thirty-six. One does not want to deny the youngsters their due (foremost among them the won derful Indian Prince), only to point out that the well-worn quotation, “ Super fluous logs, etc., scarcely applies to most of the older men now taking part iu first- class cricket. George Baker’s 140 at Southampton is higher by 31 runs than his previous best in first-class cricket— 109 v. Kent at Ton bridge five years ago. Baker is a man who reached his best form comparatively late in his career, as he was a dead failure when tried for Yorkshire in 1884, and had played off and on four or fiveyears in the Lancashire team before he did anything at all noteworthy. Up to the time at which he reached his thirtieth year, he had played 82 completedinnings for 1061 runs and taken 34 wickets for 632 in first-class cricket— certainly not a brilliant record. But, in 1892, he was in far better form than ever before, and, though he fell away again in 1893, he has ever sincebeen one of the most useful men Lancashire has had, and aplayer good enough for any side. During the past five years his 164 completedinnings have realised3646runs, an average of over 22, while he has taken 66 wickets for 1770 runs— somewhat ex pensive, but then Baker is only a change bowler. Though at times a little too de fensive in his methods, Baker is not aslow scorer as a rule; and he made his 140 in under 2J hours. J. N. P. CLAPTON v. CHESHT7NT.— Played at Clapton on May 20.
