Cricket 1897
May 20, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 M.C.C. AND GKOUND v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Lord’s on May 17, 18 and 19. M.C.C. won by 174 runs. The M.C.C. were a little stronger than in any previ ous match this season, especially in batting ; indeed there was not a man on the sidewho was not capable of making a fair score—and very few who were not goodfor a big one. W. G. appeared at Lord’s for the first time this season, and ashe had done well in the Gloucestershire v. Yorkshire match there were hopesthat he might be seen in form—perhapswith K. S. Ranjitsinhji. But there was something wrong with the wicket on the first day—or the batting. All through the day the batsmen were in difficulties, and, although here and there aman seemed able to play the bowling, the majority were uncomfortable whether against Mold and Briggs or Hearne and Martin. When such men as W. G., Ranjitsinhji, C. W. Wight, M. R. Jardine, Davidson and Lord Hawke onlyscore 11runs between them, one canonly wonder. C. E. de Trafford played a lively but all too shortinnings, C. P. Foleyagainbattedwell, andStorer at the end of the innings prevented the score from being insignificant, but at one time half the wickets were down for 40. Therewere only four single figure innings on the Lancashire side, but Paul and Smith alonemade any decided stand, and the total wasonly 20in advance of that of the M.C.C. At their second attempt the home teamhad lost a wicket for 23when stumps were drawn, sothat the two sides practically began on an equal footing the next morning. For a little while it looked asif arepetition of the previous day’s cricket was to be seen, and despite another plucky innings by de Trafford and Foley half the wickets were down for 153. It was then that affairs took an unexpected turn. Ranjitsinhji and Jardine obtained a completemastery over the bowling, after enjoying a little luck, and although the Lancashire captain tried all sorts of experiments, including lobs by Frank Sugg, thescoremountedandmounted until at last at 32* Ranjitsinhji was stumped for a great innings of 157, made in three hours and a half. Jardine followed himand the spell was broken. He had scored85in his best style. When theendseemed near along stand was made by Davidson and J. T. Hearne, with the result that Lancashire were put in to make 385 runs, towards which they contributed nine without losing awicket before the stumps were drawn. Half a dozen of the team made good scores onWednesday, but no oneof them could make the sort of total which was required if the qiatch was to be won. M.C.C. First innings. W. G.
