Cricket 1897

118 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 6, 1897. SURREY v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at the Oval on May 3 and 4. Surrey won by an innings and 2§5 runs. With this match the first-class season of 1897 began. The result of the Leices tershire and Surrey match has so often furnished a surprise, that although the midland county has not recently distin guished itself, there were not wanting prophets to foretell a defeat for Surrey this year. But in addition to the discouragement which Leicestershire re ceived last year by reason of its frequent failures, the team had to play without Pougher, who had hurt his foot badly just before the match. Under these circumstances an honourable defeat was about all that could be looked for. The match does not require much description. The last hope of Leicestershire went when Surrey won the toss, and at once began to make hay of the bowling. Abel was in as fine form as last year in this match, which is saying a good deal. He scored far more quickly than usual, and alto gether, in beginning the season with a hundred, shewed brilliant cricket. It was interesting to note that, while he was in with Brockwell, he seemed to be the hitter, while Brockwell, for once, was not quite comfortable. Nevertheless, Brockwell shewed signs that he will be as good as ever after he has settled down to his usual game. Hayward played a masterly inn ings, and when the bowling was worn to pieces Mr. Key and Mr. Read did pretty much as they liked with it. Mr. Chinnery made his debut for Surrey, but did not meet with success. Rudd bowled very well for Leicestershire, and was the only man who had anything like a good analysis. Leicestershire had to face a total of 560. The captain made 30, and contrary to his usual custom was a long time over his innings. Afterwards Joyce and Tomlin made a fine stand, and Tomlin has reason to be proud of his share in the match. The rest did very little, while in the sec ond innings no one could play Richardson, who began the season with a very fine analysis. Surrey had the easiest of vic tories, but a good many friends of the county must feel that it would have been a little more satisfactory if, besides Rich ardson and Hayward, some of the other bowlers had shewn promise of taking wickets during the season. Drawn. The cricket season of 1897 may be said to have begun at the Oval with this match, which, although it was played under dispiriting conditions, at least to show that these promising bats are ready to take their places in the county team when occasion offers. As regards bowling, matters were not quite so satis factory, and there does not seem to be another Lohmann or Richardson among the young players. H. B. Chinnery, the old Etonian, was included in the eleven, and made a successful first appearance. There is no reason why he should not develop iuto a fine bat. H. R. Parkes was the best of the Colts, as far as play in this match was concerned. S u r r e y F ir s t X I.
