Cricket 1897
A p r il 29, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 103 Du. GRACE’S TEAM v. M e . LONG’S TEAM. Played at Tonbridge on April 24th. This was the first matoh of the season of any importance, except the Colts’ matches at Nottingham and Derby. Dr. Grace’s team included nine men who had played for Gloucestershire, and although the captain himself and some of the rest, failed to give any signs of being in form so early in the season, the reputation of the county was safe in the hands of W. G. Junr., C. L. Townsend, Board, and Murch. It is whispered that W.G. was bowled by a yorker. Murch gave a very interesting exhibition of powerful and successful hitting, and it was almost a pity that Board got out just when he was nicely set, for the cricket might have been exciting if the two professionals had been in very long together. On the side of Mr. Long, the Minister of Agriculture, who has lately attracted so much atten tion from the owners of dogs, therd were several good men, notably A. J. L. Hill, but few of them managed to make much of Townsend, who has made a very good beginning of the season with six wickets for 49. Mr. Long had intended to play, but his duties prevented him from appear ing on the ground. M r . W . H. L o n g ’ s X I. A. M. Miller (capt.).c Wrathall, b Towns end .......................... 3 C.
