Cricket 1897

A pril 29, 1897. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 101 Peel, Wainwright and others are very low for their reputations. It is really strange that Ulyett should have played in 51 matches and not made a bigger innings than 79. In the matter of cen turies the professionals of Notts, Lanca shire, Surrey, Sussex, and Kent all beat them, for Wainwright’s 105 is the solitary century they have made, and yet as a county Yorkshire has played far more matches against the Australians than any other.” I like lyir. Lacy’s method of arrange ment, which renders accurate comparison far easier than the lumping together of men who have played six innings with those who have played sixty, though perhaps it might prove somewhat cum brous for ordinary use. It may not be out of place to mention i here that four of the great Yorkshire players—Brown, Peel, Ulyett, and Bates, to wit—have all done far better in matches on Australian soil, which Mr. Lacy’s figures of course do not include. Some day I hope to give the principal English averages in all matches against Australian bowling. J.N.P. CToiTegponifcntt. NOTTS v. HAMPSHIRE IN 1843. To the Editor of C ricket . Sir,—I was not mistaken when I statedthat two complete andfinished matches were played between Nottinghamshire and Hampshire in 1843. In both matches Hampshire had the assistance of one given man and no more. In the first match, at Nottingham, J. Bayley assisted Hampshire, and in the second, at Southampton, W. Dorrinton was the given man to Hampshire. The full scores of these two matches are to be found in Vol. III. of the Cricket Scores and Biographies, on pages 155 and 170. I remember well copying them out from Bell's Life. One side was got up and arranged by W. Clarke, and the other by D. Day. The first match was won by Nottinghamshire in one innings, and the second by 39 runs, also by Notts. In Page 156 of Vol. III. of the Scores and Biographies will be found a “ scratch ” match, got up to fill up the rest of the day, after the conclusion of the first match. In that match, two Nottinghamshire men, B. Good, and J. Buttery, assisted Hampshire, and only those two, and no more. However, this match, of course, cannot be reckoned as a match between the two counties, but if it did, there would have been three and not two matches that year between the two counties. (See pages 155, 156 and 170, Scores and Biographies, Vol. III.) The “ scratch” match, which cannot be counted, appears on page 156, but the two matches (bond fide) between the counties are on pages 155 and 170. Hampshire never had four given men on their side when they played Notts, only one in each match, and two in the “ scratch ” match, on page 156, which cannot be reckoned as a match at all. For reference, to anyone sufficiently interested to seewhich statement is correct:— On page 155, Vol. III. of Scores and Biographies, is the score of the first match between Hants, and Notts. ; page 170, the return match; page 156, a “ scratch” match, got up at the end of the first match to fill up time, Hampshire having Good and Buttery given them. This was only played to fill up the afternoon. Yours truly, “ AN OLD HARROVIAN.”
