Cricket 1896
A p r i l 23, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF T ilE GAME. 83 BETWEEN THE INNINGS. The project to which I alluded last week (that of giving the complete batting and bowling averages of the thirty or so Australian cricketers from whom the Ninth Team was chosen) has expanded itself in the working ou t; and the figures given below are the result. They comprise the complete averages of all the principal Colonial players in all the first class matches in which they have taken part, in Australia, in England, and in America. Thus Murdoch and Ferris, Spofforth, and Jem Phillips, C. W. Eock, and others have included in their figures their doings in English first-class cricket. Three or four other players, well-known in England, might have been included—- E. C. Eamsay, S. M. J. Woods, Gr. L. Wilson, to wit—but no one of these men has ever played in an intercolonial game in Australia; and I have taken this as the line of demarkation between an Australian and an English cricketer. In the second table in both the batting and bowling averages I have not kept quite strictly to the qualification required —viz., 20 innings or 30 wickets. A few men whose figures should have some interest from the fact of their having visited England, or having been candi dates for inclusion in the present team are set down with the rest, though not quite reaching the standard. Mr. C. P. Moody’s capital little book, “ Australian Cricket and Cricketers,” has been to some extent the foundation of my averages; but I have checked Mr. Moody’s figures wherever possible and have also gone out side the limits he has assigned to himself by including runs scored, and wickets taken in purely English first-class matches. After these fe w e x p la n a to ry rem arks, I m a y , I th in k , lea ve th e a verages to Bpeak for them selves. BATTING AVERAGES OF LEADING AUSTRA LIAN PLAYERS IN ALL FIRST-CLASS MATCHES. Jarvis (S .A .)........................ H. Donnan (N.S.W.) .......... The Australian averages given in last week’s issue (p. 78) are scarcely as correct as might be. The Queensland match is included in the N.S.W. batsmen’s aver ages, but not in the bowlers. My figures, which have been carefully checked and collated, give:— Overs. Runs. Wickets. Aver. M cKibbin.......... 862.2 ... 1098 ... 46 ... 23.86 Howell .......... 253.1 ... 613 ... 24 ... 25.58 G ould................. 42 ... 120 ... 4 ... 30.00 There are also some minor discrepancies of no particular importance save to ardent statisticians. The averages appear to have been compiled from some Australian newspaper; and the Australian news papers have lately adopted what seems to me a bad plan of adding wides and no balls to the runs scored off a bowler in the analysis. I don’t know that it is un fair to include these against a bowler, but it is certainly inconsistent. From my point of view, too, the Tas mania v. Victoria match should have been included. I am well aware that it was really Victoria’s second eleven that met the Island Colony’s team; nevertheless, the match was a genuine intercolonial, and as such, should rank first-class. I fancy that after two successive defeats from Tasmania, Victoria will arrange things differently next season. There would be little chance of her being beaten if she put a full team into the field; but Eady, Bum and Co. are decidedly too warm a lot for a second team to meet. The only Victorian players whose aver ages would be altered by the inclusion of this match are Percy Lewis (6—0—98 in stead of 4—0—82), Worrall (6—1—71 and 14 overs—46 runs—4 wickets), and Pery- man (4—0—45). Eady would be 3—0— 22 and 58.1 overs—123 runs—13 wickets. The New South Wales team is to be congratulated upon winning the Shetfield Shield for the first time. To go in to make over 170 to win in the last innings of a match, and to win by nine wickets, is distinctly a big feat. Even in its palmiest days, the mother-colony was never stronger in batting than now. The results of the matches among the three leading Colonies were as follows ;—■
