TEST MATCH v, REST OF AUSTRALIA. The test match arranged for the Australian team, before leaving Australia, was begun at Sydney, on March 6. Five matches of the kind have been played by previous Australian Elevens, viz., two by the 1880 team, two by the 1884 team, and one by the 1888 Eleven. Three times have the Australians won, once the 1880 Eleven lost, while in 1884, the intending voyageurs amassed 619, and the game was drawn. The eleven to oppose the team for England was considered to be decidedly strong, and there was every chance before the match of a good game. Light rain over night, followed by bright sun shine in the morning, had made the wicket lumpy at the outset. McDonnell, who captained the Rest, had first innings, and Lyons and Bruce went in to bat. H. Trott, the captain of the Australian team, wisely trying his two first bowlers, Eady and Jones. Lyons, after making 32, was caught, and his partner, Bruce, went the third wicket, at 73, of which he had scored 36. At the luncheon interval the score was 88 for six wickets, and the innings eventually closed for 117, of which Lyons and Bruce had, between them contributed 68. The wicket helped the fast bowlers a great deal, and Jones, in particular, was on the spot; he took five wickets for thirty runs. Four of the other five went to McKibbin, at a cost of sixty runs. Donnan and Darling opened the batting for the Australian team. The latter was bowled for a couple, and Giffen, who followed, was even less successful, being run out before he scored. Donnan and Iredale made a better stand, and the total was 68 when Albert Trott caught the latter, off his own bowling. At the end of the day, Donnan and Gregory were in, the former had scored 74, Gregory 18, and the total was 166 for four wickets. As will be seen by the scores below, the match resulted in a splendid finish, and it is greatly due to a spirited innings of 75, not out, by Gregory, that the Australian team was victorious.
