Cricket 1896

70 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A pril 16, 1896. TH E M ETROPOL ITAN CLUBS IN 1896. T he B lackheath Club will open on May 1st with a friendly match against the Blackheath Football Club. Among the chief teams to be met are the M C.C. and Ground, Surrey Club and Ground, R.A. (Woolwich), Oxford University Authentics, Band of Brothers, Butterflies, Blue Mantles. The usual home and home matches have also been arranged against Blackheath’s old opponents, Bickley Park and Beckenham. H. M. Burge, the Hon. Treasurer of Oxford University, will kindly bring a side to the Rectory Field, and a two-day match is arranged against Mr. Wright’s Nottingham X I. Nearly all the old members of the team will be available. Unfortunately, H. C. Stewart will again be unable to play until August, a most serious loss to the side. On the other hand, it is hoped that J. R. Mason, the county cricketer, will be able to assist very fairly often, and this will make a vast difference to the strength of the side. Amongst the new members up for election may be men tioned R. S. H. Baiss, L. Weigall, Capt. E. G. Waymouth, the R.A. bowler, C. Gordon Smith, a dashing batsmen by repute, and C. Dixon. Capt. George Hamilton will also be available, as he is returning from India, on leave. Street, the ground man, says he never saw the ground looking so well before. Goulder, who comes from Nottingham, is the new bowler. MAY. 1. Blackheath, v. Blackheath F.C. 2. Blackheath, v. Granville Lee. 9. Blackheath, v. Surrey Club and Ground. 16. Blackheath, v. M.C.C. 19.
