Cricket 1896

50 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A pril 9, 1896. bowling may be gathered from his scores, which included 40 and 41 against Middle sex, 153 and 52 against Somerset, 44 against Warwickshire, 87 and 29 against Leicestershire, 42 against the Australians, and 53 against Derbyshire. With more experience and increased confidence he has latterly made a great advance as a batsman. His out-oricket has generally been of use, as, besides being an excellent field, he has assisted at times, in an emer gency, as a change bowler (medium round). Still, it is as a batsman that he has been, and is likely to be, best known. While his defence has always been sound, t ie la it two years have added considerably to his power. As a consequence he has become a much more dangerous batsman, and as he has plenty of strokes and can hit all round the wicket, in all likelihood he has yet to be seen at his best. In any case his future will be watched with interest, if only for the reason that he ha* always been of irreproachable conduct as well as a keen and conscientious work er.
