VICTOEIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. The fifty-sixth match between elevens representing these Colonies, began on the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 25th, ended, after five days’ play, in a victory for Victoria, by four wickets. The New South Wales eleven was better than at the first match of the season, being strengthened by the inclusion of C. T. B. Turner and S. E. Gregory. Bain had fallen on the night preceding the com mencement of the match, and H. Trott, winning the toss for Victoria, decided to send New South Wales in to bat. As it was, a heavy shower delayed a start considerably, and the first day’s play only saw the dismissal of one batsman (A. C M ’Kenzie) for thirty-two, Iredale and Donnan being each sent out for sixteen. On the following Monday the pitch still favoured the bowlers to some extent, and when the tenth wicket fell the score was only 187. Bruce, who opened the Victoria batting with C. M’Leod, was caught after making 23 out of 26, and then the latter with H. Trott carried the score to 94, when play ceased for the day, Trott having scored 40 and M ’Leod 29, On the following morning Trott was first to do and he stayed till the sixth wicket, having made 100 out of 245 while he was in. He played sound and judicious cricket making his runs all round the wicket and without an actual chance. Towards the end of his innings M’Kibbin, who had had 102 runs scored off him without getting a wicket, bowled with great success. He took the last four wickets for 12 runs. When play ceased on the third day New South Wales, who were 132 behind, had wiped off 22 of their arrears without the loss of a wicket. Donnan, not out, 11; M’Kenzie, not out, 10. Besuming the next morning only 26 were scored before Donnan played on. Iredale and M’Kenzie played excellent cricket, with the result that the score had been raised to 138—or six runs on—when Iredale was out. Gregory and Walters lent McKenzie useful help and when the fourth wicket fell the score was 240. Then came a great change and with Garrett, Richardson, and Kelly all out for nothing, seven wickets were down for 247. After this- Turner hit freely, and Walters was left to carry out his bat for a very useful 68. Left with 207, Victoria did not begin too well, but it was left to Laver and Harry, after six batsmen had gone, to win the match for Victoria, which they did, with four wickets to fall.
