484 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. D ec . 31, 1896. Fifteen times altogether: no other player except Shrewsbury has done it three times. He has reached three figures at Lord’s on seven occasions, at the Oval four times, and at Brighton, Prince’s, Scarborough, and Hastings once each. Although a team of Gloucestershire players met the M.C.C. at Lord’s in 1868, yet the Gloucestershire County Club was not really formed until the year of Grace, 1870. During the seventies, mainly owing to the brothers Grace, Gloucester shire was frequently champion county, and was often strong enough to play, and sometimes beat, England. W. G., E. M., G. F . ; what a power those names were in the seventies! The early death of G. F. in 1880 left a gap in the Gloucester shire ranks which has never been filled to this day. E. M. has now practically retired, but W. G. still plays and heads the list in the batting averages. TABLE 1.—TABLE SHOWING D b . GRACE’S BATTING AVERAGES FOR GLOUCESTER- Year. Matches.
