D ec . 31, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 483 at Esher on May 3, 1833—he played for his county with much success as a wicket keeper, a bowler who could make the ball break a great deal, and a sound batsman. He played his last match for Surrey as recently as 1871. As a member of Clarke’s All England Eleven, he attracted general notice, and in 1861 he was chosen as captain of the first English team which visited Australia. Stephenson was well known to hunting men, and just before he went to Upping ham he acted as huntsman to the Duke d’Auoiale. He was always very pleased to talk of his hunting days. W. A. B ette s w o r t h . AUSTRALIANS IN NEW ZEALAND. THE AUCKLAND MATCH. Played at Auckland on November 6, 7 and 9.—Drawn. The Australians arrived at Auckland on Thursday, November 5, and on the following morning received a public welcome at the Municipal Buildings. Most of the men had a little practice on the afternoon of the day of their arrival, but as the match began on the following afternoon there was not much time for them to get into form. As was only to be expected, however, they had decidedly the best of the game, although several of the New Zealanders, notably J. Mills, with the bat, and R. Neill with the ball, shewed great promise. Neill, who is slow right, only requires accuracy to improve his bowling cent, per cent. kThe ground at Auckland is very large and very long, and notwithstanding that the ends were roped off, the area for play was greater than that of nine out of ten county grounds. As the highest scorer among the visitors, Trott was presented by the Australians living in Auckland with a table inlaid with New Zealand wood. X V i n o f A u c k l a n d . First innings. G. GRACE 1865-1896. B y F. S. A.-C. (Continued from page 471.) GENTLEMEN v. PLAYERS. Until Dr. Grace made his appearance in these matches the Players had for many years been winning game after game, but when he appeared all this was changed. He played his first match at the Oval in 1865, when he scored 23 and 12 not out, and took seven wickets for 125 runs in the two innings. In spite of his efforts, however, the Players managed to win, but they were not again victorious until 1880, although one match was drawn greatly in their favour. The following week he appeared at Lord’s and assisted the Gentlemen in winning their first match since 1853, after losing 19 games in succession. TABLE 1.—TABLE SHOWING D e .
