Cricket 1896
476 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. D ec . 31, 1896. “ c &b ” from the “ caught ” since the former are due to the unaided efforts of the bowler. McKibbin comes first in number of “ stumped,” closely followed by Hartley, Briggs and Townsend. In the “ lb w ” column Hulme and George Giffen stand out conspicuously. And that, I really think, is all. None but those who have themselves engaged in similar work will be able to understand what time and pains these columns of figures have cost me. It is easy enough to do such work in a per functory way; but this I have never done, and never will do. Every figure is, to the best of my knowledge, correct. That there may be mistakes both of omission and com mission I can well believe, because no one is infallible; but I do honestly think that they are few and far between. Doubtless, there are those among my readers who have no stomach for so much in the way of statistics ; but I feel sure that there are many who will be glad to have this synopsis of the year’s cricket for reference. I don’t recommend it as light reading matter, any more than I would recommend as such a dictionary, a concordance, or a trades’ directory ; but I say that it has its uses, and I hope to thus sum marisethe season’s cricket, in Cricket , for many years to come.
