Cricket 1896

Nov. 26, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 459 BETWEEN THE INNINGS. THE FIRST-CLASS SEASON OF 1896. (Continuedfrom page 444.) Y .— G ood B owling P erformances . This necessarily makes a large section, though 1896 was not a bowler’s year. I want to make this summary as complete a record as possible (within reasonable space) of the first-class season of 1896, and, therefore, I have not bound myself down to any precise number of wickets or any precise maximum average per wicket, but have endeavoured to include all the performances that seemed to me really remarkable. I have, however, sub divided the achievements in such a way as to make them easy of reference. Let me begin, then, with TnE H a t T ric k . Richardson—Surrey v. Leicestershire, Oval, May 8— Pougher, Geeson, and Coe, all bowled. G. Giffen—Australians v. Wembley Park XI., June 8 —E. A. Nepean, P. Perrin, and Rawlin, all bowled. J. T. Heame—Middlesex v. Kent, Tunbridge, June 17 —Rev. W . Rashleigh, F. Marchant, and E. H. Simpson, all bowled. J. T. Brown—Yorkshire v. Derbyshire, Derby, June 26—8torer caught, G. A. Marsden caught and bowled, Hulme caught. H. Trumble—Australians v. Gloucestershire, Chelten ham, August 23—R. W. Rice caught and bowled, W . M. Hemingway and C. O. H. Sewell bowled. T. R. McKibbin—Australians v. Lancashire, Liver pool, August 28—Baker stumped, G. R. Bardswell bowled, Briggs caught. M o r e t h a n T w e l v e W ic k e t s in a M a t c h . Match. At O. R. W. Sy. v. No one took ten wickets in an innings during the season of 1896, but Jack Hearne had all the wickets in the second innings of the Australians v. M.C.C. at Lord’s, Gillen’s absence (ill) preventing his achieving the bigger feat. His figures on that occasion were 50-3—73—9 ; and they are included in his 13 wickets in the same match, the figures for which are given above. Mead had the analysis 33*3 — 75 — 9 in the second innings v. Leicestershire in the Whit-Monday match at Leyton. J. T. Hearne and Rawlin—for Middlesex v. Surrey, Oval, June 25 and 26. Surrey scored 45 and 126. J. T. Hearne and Pougher—for Earl de la Warr’s XI. v. Australians, Bexhill, July 30 and 31. Aus tralians scored 80 and 138. H. Trumble and T. R. McKibbin—for Australians v. Lancashire, Liverpool, August 27, 28 and 29. Lancashire scored 62 and 28. This is never a long list; and it is only natural that for 1896, a great run-getting season, it should be even shorter than usual. {e) WICKET-KEEPING. It is quite impossible to establish any reasonable system of averages to enable one to determine the relative merits of the various wicket-keepers. Obviously, the number of catches and stumpings made is not a sufficient criterion, for it overlooks the number of runs allowed in the shape of byes. Nor would a combination of these two factors—the number of wickets in whose downfall the wicket keeper had a hand, and the loss to his side in the byes to be debited to him—be altogether satisfactory. All I shall give here will be the number of catches and stumpings made ; and I have preferred to give the men in alphabetical order. I have disregarded those who only kept in one or two matches. I should have less readiness in vouching for the absolute correctness of these figures than for others in this summary, because it may happen that a wicket-keeper makes a catch while fielding out for a time ; but I have done my best to make the figures absolutely accurate.
