Cricket 1896
438 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . 17, 1896. There cannot be much doubt that it was this methodical way of batting which caused so many disasters, for as a rule, until quite late in the year, nobjdy on the side was able to move out of the g r o o v e into which he had become accustomed, evenwhen it was imperatively necessary to leave it. The bowling, hs Australian bowling is always, was dis tinctly good, and of a far higher class than most of that which Australian bats men generally had to meet. Trumble, who hasneverhad areal chance before surpassed himself, and must hereafter be numbered with his half-dozen great predecessors. Jones was terrifying on fiery or crumbling wickets, and M’Kibbin, after a long period of failure, was seen in his true colours. Trott, Gitfen and Eady were at times very successful indeed, but often ineffective. The team accomplished far more than was expected of it, and was much above the average of r( cent teams. The County Championship aroused as much interest as ever, despite the counter attraction of the Australians, and the newspaper controversy about the remark able method of scoring now in use, and the proper positions of tho counties as opposed to their positions on the table, was never more excited. In the early part of the season it seemed to be a toss up as to whether Surrey or Yorkshire would come out first, but presently Surrey began to go on the down grade, and the chances of Lancashire and Middlesex were talked about. But a few drawn matches by Yorkshire and the other two counties, and an improvement in Surrey cricket, once more made the result an open question. It was not until quite the end of the county season that Yorkshire was secure in its position. At the lowest round of the ladder was Sussex, and yet Sussex has accomplished more extraordinary performances during the year than all the rest of the counties put together. But their frequent inability to play a good first innings dis counted tht-ir frequent remarkable second innings, and as their bowling was generally weak, and as drawn games (which were nearly always in their favour) do not count, they had to take their present humble position. It is noteworthy, however, that nobody has at present suggested that they ought this year to le ignominicuj-ly rele gated to the rank of a second class county. The *Varsity match, which ended in favour of Oxford, was memorable for the wides and no-balls bowled by C. B. Shine, with the object of preventing Oxford from following on. This man oeuvre, which had been anticipated by C. M. Wells three years previously, led to much controversy, and fiually to a circular from the M.C.C. to the counties upon the question of the follow-on. AVERAGES GF THE LAST FIVE YEARS. N.B.—The averages of the past four years which appeared in last week’s Cricket were for county matches only. BATTING AVERAGES. 189o. 1895. 1894. 1893. 1892.
