Cricket 1896
430 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 17, 1896. SURREY v. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND (with two Professionals). 1 ’iayeclat Reigateon September 11 and 12. Drawn. For the last few years it has been usual to wind up the season by a match at Reigate between Mr. Grace’s team and Mr. W. W. Real’s team. The players are neirly all accustomed to take part in first-class cricket, but the fixture, being entirely of a holiday nature, has not been counted as first-class. This year an alteration was made in the title of the match. On the first day it was quite imp )si>ible for any cricket to take place, but on Saturday a few hours were avail able for play. The Gentlemen won the toss and made good use of their oppor tunities. They were distinctly strong in batting. Mr. Hewett made one of his very rare appearances in important cricket, and aUo made one of his very rare single figure itmings. Mr. Stoddart, Mr. Fry, and K. S. Ranj itsinbj i were not very successful, but some fine batting was shown by Mr. Townsend and Mr. Murdoch. The Sussex captain, not having the reputation of his county at stake, hit so hard as to make one wonder whether after all it would not be advisable for him to follow in the footsteps of Mr. F. G. J. Ford, Mr. Brann and other big hitters. In his score of 62 were no less than eleven fours. With ihe total at 180 for 5 wickets the innings was dosed. Run delayed the commencement of tbe Suirey innings, and stumps had to be drawn early owing to renewed rain, but in about three- quarters of an hour 73 runs were hit up against the very moderate bawling at the dijposal of the captain of the Gentlemen’s team. The uaual order of the Surrey batting—Abel was not playing—was entirely altered, Richardson going in first with Brockwell, followed by Wood. Richardson soon got out, but Wood and Brockwell hit vigorously and well. Rm jitsinbji had a good bowling analysis —two wickets for 30. G entlem en of E n gland . II. T.
