Cricket 1896
S ep t . 17, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 429 in batting since he came out in 1891 ; but his successes were almost all in the first half of the season. So were Wrathall's, whose fall ing-off after a fine start was somewhat inexplicable, seeing that he was not handi capped as Board was with the cares of wicket-keeping. Murch’s bowling was not of much use ; and the new man, Pepall, did not strike the critics as being high-class. Roberts’s wickets were, as usual, costly ; but the Western county would be badly off with out Roberts in the earlier part of the season. Captain Luard, Mr. Do Winton, and Painter played but seldom ; the first-named bid fairly well. The only colt of much promise was Mr. W. S. A. Brown, of Leys School, who may prove a welcome addition to the County’ s howlers. Of those not yet referred to, Mr. Frank Mitchell was scarcely in his best form, and was not asked to play for Yorkshire, though he did fairly well for Cambridge; Mr. C. E. M. Wilson improved greatly, and is now a really fine all-round player; Mr. H. K. Foster was in fine form for Oxford, and it seems a pity that no first-class county can claim his services; Mr. F. H. E. Cunliffe bowled really well, andmight with advantage have been given a trial for Lancashire ; Mr. C. C. Pilkington was in good form ; Mr. P. S. Waddy, an Australian, batted well and bowled fairly; Mr. P. W. Cobbold, a slow bowler, showed promising form for Cam bridge ; Mr. H. Gray bowled well in one or two matches, but was kept out of the ’ Varsity game by an accident; Mr. G. B. Raikes was useful, but not brilliant; and Mr. W. Gr. Druce and Mr. H. T. Hewett played but one innings each, scoring 100 and 86 respectively. J. N. P. HUNDREDS IN FIRST-CLASS CRICKET, 1896. Abel, Surrey v. Warwickshire, May 4 .................338 Abel, Surrey v.
