T h ou g h he is not quite the great bowler that he was in his best days, Mr. Spofforth still continues, in his occasional appearances in first-class matches, to keep the modern cricketer in mind of the fact that he was once the greatest of all bowlers—the “ Demon.” It was a splendid performance of his at Scar­ borough, at the end of last week, to take 8 wickets for 74, when the other bowlers, Mead, Davidson, and Alec Heame could make no impression at all on the batsmen. Mr. Spofforth can indeed look upon his appearances in first-class cricket this season with equanimity. I n the thirty-four matches played by the Australians, during their tour, they have won the toss twenty times and lost it fourteen times.
