Cricket 1896
S e p t . 3, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 403 TOURS. N o n d e s c r ip ts.— Perhaps the most successful tour the Nondescripts have ever had concluded on August 11th. Not a match was lost, three being won easily, one drawn very much in our favour, and the fifth creditably drawn, though rather against us. This was the match against Uxbridge, withwhich we com menced, and as we hadbyno means our full strength, our opponents ran up 268 for eight wickets before declaring. Thanks to a very steady38 not out by our captain, L. Corke, and a capital 43 by G. 8. Hickson, our total reached 170 for five wickets, Hickson having never shown such good form as heheredisplayed. In the evening we went down to Wellineton (Somerset), spending a quietSundaythere. OnMondaywefound that the wicket had ruffered a good deal from lain, and 32 wickets fell for 238 runs, the bowling of Gamlin for Wellington and Marsden for the tourists being almost unplayable, and the fielding being very smart on both sides. On Tuesday the wicket had improved, and J. S. Haycraft and L. Corke, by steady cricket, knocked off the 80 runs we required to win, giving us an eight-wicket victory. A driveto Taunton and a few hours watching the Middlesex v. Somerset match occupied the remainder of the day. On Wed nesday and Thursday, the 5th and 6th, we played North Devon, at Instow. on a perfect wicket which looked and played something like concrete. To our great surprise we got rid of our opponents for 123, Pawling and Marsden bowling very steadily. Hay craft and Cobb started out innings well, until Frank Townsend, sen., went on with lobsand gotrid of both. He continued to get wickets, but McMillin (61) and Beaton (81) made a lengthy stand, both playing ex cellent cricket, and in the end we reached 306. The two Townsends had a hand in everywicket. InNorth Devon’s second innings they were again to the fore, making a long stand together until the junior was run out for 47. The elder continued to play splen didly, finding a veryuseful partner inW. H. Arundel, jun., and in spite of Marsden’s fine bowling they set us a few to get, which we did for the loss of one wicket. Going on .to Westward Ho we found a splendidwicketpreparedforusonthe CollegeGround, and very little bowling against us, some very even fcoring on our part resulting in a total of 316. Hay craft, McMillin, Marsden, Hutchinson, and Hill all did well. Arundell, jun., again showed splendid form against our bowling, only just failing to reach the century, but the tail failed to support him, and tht-ir total fell short of ours by 30. We hardly realised the possibility of a win and scored rather slowly in our second innings, though Cobb hit hard towards the close of his 86. Closing at 189 for three wickets we did very well for a time, but Arundell again saved his side from disaster, his 70not out being a very fine innings. They had sevenwickets d >wnwith 80 still to get. to that the drawwas in our favour. Marsden and Pawling again bore the brunt of our attack, the latter doing very well in the first innings; he suffered from a chill in (he secondwhich prevented him from going on until just at the close. A delightful drive to Clovelly occupied most of Sunday, ar«l on Monday we commenced our final match against North Devon. We found a very useful sub-titute for Pawling in C. M. Leese, who with McMillin made our first stand, both getting into the forties. The rest of the batting was, however, dwarfed byMarsden’s 108,made out of 130 while he was in. His hitting was very hard and clean, and the one or two chances he gave were very hot ones. Hill and Ibbs finished the innings with some brisk hitting. North Devon collapsed for 78 against the bowling of Marsden and Corke, but did much better in the follow-on, Townsend playing splendidly for his 63, while he found a most useful partner in Fansbawe (42) justat a criticaltime. They just failed to save the innings defeat. Thus ended a most eTjoyable tour, inwhich the weather was almost peifeet, our hotels comfortable, and our opponentsso charming that we hope to meet them all again next year. Where every man **came off” on occasions, and did his best at all times, to mention our members by name would be invidious, but E. L. Marsden was in such form with bat and ball thathealmostrequires a line to himself. He scored 234 runs for four times out, and took 36 wickets, arecordwhich he has never approached on tour.
