Cricket 1896
A u g . 27, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 389 KENT y. YORKSHIRE. Played at Tonbridge on August 24, 2-5and 26. Yorkshire won by 107 runs. As in all the other matches played at thebeginning of this week, rain greatly interfered with theprogress of the game. Yorkshire won the toss and began very badly, losing five wickets for 39. But the tail once more came to the rescue of the side, and when the innings closed, the scoring board shewed a very different state of affairs. Of the batsmen who went in early, only Brown did anything of note, but Mr. Smith and Hirst, each playing a free and determined game, made runs quickly, and Lord Hawke again played a very useful innings, Mr. Smith’s 45 and Hirst’s 58 made a vast differenceto Yorkshire. Kent began with Mr. Mason and Alec Hearne, who was able to resume his place in the team, and while they were batting there did not seem to be any great difficulty in the bowling. But after the effects of rolling had been worn of, the wicket began to do curious things and Kent collapsed for 91. Of the two batsmen who made the runs against Somerset, Mr. Patterson was unable to play, and Lord Harris did not score. When the innings came to a con clusion stumps were drawn. No play was possible on Tuesday owing to heavy rain. On Wednesday Yorkshire declared with'their total at 124, and Kent could do little on fa difficult wicket. Mr. Burnup, however, played a very innings. Y o r k sh ir e . First innings. F. S. Jackson, c Huish, b Martin.............................. Harris, b Second innings. ESSEX. Played at Southampton on Aug. 24, 25 and 26. Hampshire won by an innings and 113 runs. It was not a strong team that Hampshire put in the field, but it rendered a wonderfully good account of itself. Opportune showers helped them a good deal, but their total of 296 was large enough to afford much satisfaction to the side. The hero of the day was Mr. H. F. Ward, who, going in late, made his score exactly a hundred before he was out. He played all the bowling with ease and confidence, and made his runs more quickly than usual. Barton and Mr. E. M. Barrett played fine cricket for 56 and 47, and Mr. Robsonmade a very useful 22 at the begin ning of the inning*. Soar, who returned to the team after an absence of some little time on account of a strain, went in tenth with the total at 181, andcarried his bat for 41. While he was inwithMr. Ward, more than a hundred runs were put on. Hampshire were batting the whole of the first day, with a few inter ruptions from rain. On Tuesday, only a few overs could be bowled, and at close of play Essex had made 45 for two wickets. Carpenter played well on Wed nesday, but a follow on was necessary. Carpenter againplayed well, and so did Mr. Perrin, but the rest did very little. H am psh ire . D. A. At half past one o’clock on Monday it was found that there was not the slightest chance of any play taking place until the next day, and stumps were accordingly drawn. On the next morning, play did not begin until just after one o’clock, wnen Surrey began batting on a difficult wicket. The innings, as was to be expected, was not remarkable for big scor ing, but while Hayward and Baldwin were together for the third wicket, the Gloucestershire bowling was nearly collared. Hayward played beautiful cricket for 47, and Baldwin, who since his successful appear anceagainstYorkshire has hardly donehimselfjustice, made a very useful 57. Most of the other men each made a few runs, and the total when the inniugs came to an end, was by no means to be despised. Gloucestershire, when stumps were drawn, had made 8 without the loss of a wicket. There was practically no chance of finishing the game on Wednesday. S u rrey . Brockwell, b Jessop ...
