Cricket 1896
362 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 20, 1896. bats can expect to bowl very well. One can, it is true, learn to get a better pitch, and to get more break and variation, but these are only a few of the things which a good bowler seems able to do. I have got a good many wickets in club cricket, including six for 11 for Surrey Club and Ground v. Woking, but I have been hit about more than once. I very well remember the Crystal Palace match at the Oval in 1893, when Captain Fleming and Mr. Jephson made a lot of runs for the Palace—they hit me properly hard.” “ Whom do think the best bowler you met in South Africa?” ‘ ‘ Well, I thought that Hendriks bowled better than anybody else, but as, on account of his colour, he wras not played in any of the matches during the last tour, it is difficult to say. Many a man can bowl very finely at the nets who in a match is of hardly any use at all. But as a practice bowler, which is all I know of him, he was certainly very good and very fast indeed.” “ What do you consider your best innings in South Africa ? ’ * “ I should think it was 84 against King William’s Town, for the wicket was about the worst I have ever played on. There had been a lot of rain, and the matting was badly stretched, so that the ball did the most curious things; it jumped about all over the place and it was sometimes quite extraordinary how it came at you. I happened to be one of the fortunate ones who escaped being out in a few minutes, and I managed somehow or other to carry my bat through the innings—the total was 109. The other side made a good game of it, fcr we were very weak in bowling, a George Lohmann was not playing, and more over they knew much more about matting wiokets than we did. George bowled wonder fully well in South Africa ; in fact I have never seen him bowl better. This season he has as much variety as ever and is as accurate in pitch. It may be mentioned that Hayward, although he was not born in Surrey, is of Surrey stock ; his grandfather played for the county. W . A. B e t t e s w o r t h . STOICS v. ST.
