Cricket 1896
35 6 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 13, 1896. LANCASHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Manchester on August 10, 11 and 12. Drawn. Owing to a misunderstanding, the services of Mold were not available to Lancashire this match, for although a substitute fielded for him on the chance that he might not be included in the England team at the Oval, it was afterwards heard that he had been chosen, and the substitute, F. Ward, was put on to bowl. In Mold’s absence, therefore, Lancashire had to rely almost entirely on Briggs and Hallam, with the result that Derbyshire had a fine opportunity of making runs, and utilized it remarkably well. Two wickets fell very quickly, but when Chatterton and Davidson were together for the third wicket, the trials of Lancashire began. Buns were made quickly and persistently. The bowling was soon collared so completely, that nothing but a happy accident could dissolve the partnership. The accident was long in coming, but it came at last, when the two Derbyshire men had made 208 runs between them. The scoring was continued by Storer and Davidson, who were together when the day’s play ended with the total at 881, and were not separated until it was 542, when Storer was out. The partnership had produced 308 runs. Davidson still went on, passed the two hundred, and was finally out for 274. The three famous Derbyshire batsmen had all played very sound and very attractive cricket. The rest of the team did not excite themselves about scoring, and the innings closed for 577. With nothing to do but play for a draw, Lancashire began very well indeed, and Mr. Rowley, Sugg, and Paul played brilliantly, but a follow on was necessary. Bain handicapped the Lancashire batsmen. When Kent lost the toss they naturally expected to have a long day’s fielding, for no rain had fallen at Nottingham to spoil the wicket, as at the Oval, but they little knew what they were in for. Shrewsbury and A. O. Jones began the batting for Notts, and were not parted until they had put on 223 runs in three hours and a half. The cricket was by no means uninteresting to watch, forboth batsmen are graceful and both scored at a moderately good pace. After Jones left for 113, Shrewsbury was very quiet for a time, and looked on while Dixon hit. Then came a quite unexpected collapse, and at the end of the day three wickets were down for 326, Gunn (not out) 8, and Shrewsbury (not out) 133. Thus there was the possibility of a rare stand on the next morning, for when Gunn and Shrewsbury get on together there is no telling what may happen. But Gunn was unable to continue his innings, and nobody else could stay with Shrewsbury, who was at last out for 172, an innings which, although it lasted for about seven hours, was of inestimable value to his side, for if he had not kept up his wicket the total would have been by no means large. Guttridge hit brilliantly at the end of the innings. Before the second day’s play was over, it was seen that the total of 430 made by Notts was as likely as not to be exceeded, for Kent had made 251 for two wickets. Mr. Mason played a great innings of 131, scoring about twice as fast as his partner. Unfortunately Heame, who at close of play was not out SI, was unable to resume his innings in the morning, and except that Mr. Rashleigh played well the Kent men were unlucky, and the follow on was only just saved. There was very little chance after this of finishing the match. N o t ts . First innings. Shrewsbury, c Huish, b Martin..............................172 A . O.
