Cricket 1896

338 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 6, 1896. very big feet.” This was the salutation addressed to one of the Notts team after their dismissal at the Oval on Monday for a total of 09. Bat a Bank Holiday crowd has a huraour of its own. And after all, the thirty thousand people who visited the Surrey ground on Monday had little to enliven them in the cricket during the early part, of the day. That mad bull, which, it is sad to think, owed its existence solely to the inventive reporter, would have been a perfect godsend had he only got inside in the forenoon, or, indeed, any time up to the luncheon interval. T h o u g h the Laird of Matjesfontein only reached England in the Norman Castle on Thursday, he made his way to the Oval at once to assist at George Lohmann’s benefit. Lohmann, it is hardly necessary to say, found a hospit able welcome from Me J. D. Logan during his stay in South Africa. Nor was his benefit forgotten on the voyage home in the Norman , for Mr. Logan was able to collect the goodly sum of twenty five pounds from the passengers. Mr. Charles Pond, Lohmann’s step-brother, handed to the treasurer one hundred pounds as the result of his performance of “ Othello” at the Covent Garden Theatre on Thursday night. Further, the subscription list bids fair to be a big one, so that there is every reason to believe the benefit will be the best on record for the Oval, which will be tidings of joy to Cricket readers one and all. K. S. R a n ji t s i n h ji has now played seven innings of a hundred in first- class cricket this season. When he was at Cambridge, it was said by more than one competent authority that he was likely to be a useful man to any side, and might occasionally make about fifty, but that he had not the physical strength which was required to make a hundred. Last Thursday, Alfred Bennett, a man of thirty-two, ran to catch a ball which had been skied off his bowling, and came into collision with point, who also went for the catch. Bennett was apparently struck on the chin by point’s head, and died almost at once. At the inquest which took place on Saturday, the jury found that death was due to accident. Point was insensible for about ten minutes. F o r Corsham (Wilts) v. Mr. Herbert Harris’s X I., which included three of the Wiltshire professionals, J. G. O’Brien, a brother of Sir T. C., carried his bat through the innings on July 29th for 96 runs out of a total of 166, about 15 of which were extras. O f the 14 first-class matches which have been played at the Oval this year, eight have been won by the side which went in second. Surrey has only gone in first four times, but in the Derbyshire match Mr. Key put his opponents in.
