Cricket 1896
J u l y 23, 1896. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 301 YORKSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Southampton on July 16, 17 and 18. Drawn. It is pretty safe to say that if Yorkshire, despite the absence of Mr. Jackson and Brown, who were playing for England, had won the toss against Hamp shire, they would have made one of the big totals for which they are famous when the wicket is good. As, on the other hand, they lost it, they for once had the experience of fielding out for the other side until they became aweary. It cannot be argued against Hamp shirethat theabsenceof the two famousYorkshiremen, who were at Old Trafford, appreciably weakened the Yorkshire bowling, for Brown, though he is a man who may be put on as a change with advantage, is not a great bowler, and Mr. Jackson has lately been altogether out of form with the ball. Captain Wynyard, who has done so much for Hampshire, was the hero of the match. He has again proved that when he is in form the class of bowling which he meets does not make much difference to him ; he can score against Sussex, and he can score against the Australians, with almost equal ease. Against Yorkshire he was an hour and a half in making his first fifty, but after this his rate of scoring was rapid enough to astonish the bowlers, who are not used to being collared by anybody. At the end of the first day he was not out 211. He was greatly helped by Mr. Ward and Captain Quinton, who each played very fine cricket for over 50, but while he was batting only 323 runs were put on, so that he scored about two thirds of the runs. Three wickets had fallen for 350, and one may doubt whether any team has ever done such a fine per formance against Yorkshire. On Friday Captain Wynyard increased his score to 268, aninnings which had lasted for just over six hours; it comprised two 6’s, thirty-eight 4’s, five 3’s, twenty-three 2’s and forty-three singles. While he was batting 402 run were made, so that he scored exactly two thirds of the runs. The innings closed for 515, Soar carrying his bat for 39. The Yorkshiremen could not by any possibility win, and at half past three they set about playing for a draw in a very determined way. Not that all the batsmen made runs very slowly, for in the three hours that remained for play, 206 runs were put on; but some of the team played the game which is usually adopted when a draw is the only hope for a side. Tunnicliffe, for instance—the great hitter of the team—was in for nearly an hour for 7, while Peel made 36 in an hour and half. On Saturday Mounsey and Hirst played well, but the innings closed for 307, and the probability that Yorkshire would not be dismissed a second time before the match ended, became almost a certainty, for the Hampshire bowlers had lost their freshness. Nevertheless, Yorkshire began very badly indeed. At 3 Denton was out; Wainwright followed him at 13; at 17 Peel was bowled by Soar; directly after wards Tunnicliffe was disposed of, and Hampshire looked like winning easily. At this stage of the game Mounsey was missed, and after this the bats men began to gain the upper hand of the bowling. Mr. Milligan, Mounsey and Hirst all made over 50. But despite their efforts Hampshire still had a chance of winning, for when the last two men came together (Moorhouse was unable to bat) the total was only 209, and there was time for Hampshire to go in again. But Haigh and Hunter kept in until half past six. It was a splendid finish to an interest ing match, and although the Hampshire men were naturally disappointed at not having time to win, they may greatly congratulate themselves on the result of the match.
