Cricket 1896
292 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 16, 1896. SUSSEX v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Brighton on July 13, 14 and 15. Hampshire won by seven wickets. The absence of K . S. Ranjitsinhji, who was playing for the Gentlemen at Lord’s, was greatly felt by the Sussex team, which otherwise was at full strength. Captain Wynyard won the toss—a fine stroke of business on his part—and as there was no particular reason why a big total should not be made, the Sussex bowlers had a bad time of it, although only two men, Mr. Ward and Captain Wynyard, made a large score. Both of them played beautiful cricket, and the Hamp shire captain scored his first 100 of the season in first- class cricket. Hartley was the most successful bowler, but he was decidedly expensive. Sussex cannot be said to have begun very well, for when stumps were drawn they had lost Killick, and the total was 37. On Tuesday, the Sussex total would have been very small, indeed, but for the fine stand made by Mr. Newham and Mr. Brann ; the latter seemed thoroughly set for a long innings when he was lb w ; Mr. Newham nearly made his hundred. In the follow on, Killick was out at once, but Marlow hit brilliantly. At the close of the day’s play, things looked very bad indeed for Sussex, for with the score at 110, they had lost 4 good wickets, including Marlow, Mr. Murdoch and Bean. Mr. Newham again played well on Wednes day morning, and some fine cricket by Mr. Arlington and Parris caused the total to be good. Nevertheless, Hampshire had an easy task. H a m p s h ir e . WARWICKSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Derby on July 13, 14 and 15. Derbyshire won by 10 wickets. As Storer was playing at Lord’s, Derbyshire were considerably handicapped. Although Warwickshire made 232 in the first innings, their batting was. on the whole, very poor. Fortunately for them Lilley was in magnificent form and made 132, but the only other man who did anything of note was Pallett. If the Derbyshire tail had distinguished themselves in the slightest degree, the total of their county, which was 65 more than that of Warwickshire, would have been very much larger. As it was, all Ihe first six men except Davidson played exceedingly good cricket; it was curious that most of the wickets were taken by Lilley, the wicket-keeper. A t the close of play on Tuesday, Warwickshire were only 17 runs on and had lost four wickets. They did not greatly improve their position on Wednesday morning. W a r w ic k s h ir e . First innings. Played at Leyton on July 13, 14 and 15. Drawn. When Leicestershire lost the toss against the Aus tralians they must have made up their minds to enjoy a very long outing, for they have not enough bowling to be of much use against such a powerful batting team as their visitors. The county was practically at full strength, for although Mr. Hillyard was absent, he has not been very successful this year. At the beginning of the game a great piece of luck fell in the way of Leicestershire, for Iredale was out first ball; there the good fortune of the county ended, and when stumps were drawn only three wickets were down for 299, and one of them was obtained by a run out, so that the bowlers must have been disheartened. Darling was not out 145, Giffen and Donnan each made over 60, and Gregory was just beginning what was as likely as not to be a loD g innings. On Tues day the two not-outs continued to score until the Leicestershire men began to think of record totals. Darling just failed to make his two hundred, and Gregory just made his hundred. All the rest of the team, except Kelly, made runs, and there was an inspiriting stand for the last wicket. There were a good many extras. A t close of play Leicestershire had lost Mr. De Trafford, and had scored 26. Of the baiting on Wednesday nothing need be said—the home team were simply playing for a draw. A u s t r a l ia n s . F.
