CAPE TOWN Owing to departure of the troops on Saturday, January 25, Cap9 Town were left without a match, and accordingly a one-day, or rather a half-day fixture was arranged between the Western Province and its formidable rival. After an exciting finish, the game had to be left drawn very much in favour of the town club, as when stumps were drawn on the call of time they were only two runs behind, and had still three wickets in hand. The 17th Regiment made their debut in local cricket in January last at Newlands, and by their play, they have not brought the much-needed cricketing strength for the Garrison. With the exception of Lieutenant Challoner none of the Regi mental team showed much cricketing ability. The lieutenant, however, was well on the spot with the ball, taking six wickets for 29 runs, and it was chiefly due to him that the Province only com piled the small score of 75. But with the bat the newcomers made a very poor show indeed, Lieutenant Challoner (8) and Private Southall (10), were the oi ly two who made any attempt to play the bowling of Graham and Crease- Score:— W estern P rovince .
