Cricket 1896

276 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J c ly 9, 1896 SUSSEX v. KENT. Played at Hastings on July 6, 7 and 8. Kent won by an innings and 16 rans. After a series of disasters, great enough to dis courage any team whatever, Kent was able to put a very strong batting side into the field against Sussex, and as the captain had the good fortune to win the toss, the Sussex bowlers were pretty nearly tired by the end of the day. The two Blues, Burnup and Mordaunt, did nothing remarkable in the way of scoring, but Alec Hearne was in great form and only just missed his hundred, while Mr. Marchant, who came in just when things were beginning to look well for Sussex, once more turned the game in favour of Kent. He was admirably backed up by W right and Martin, the latter of whom has perhaps never played a finer innings. Mr. Marchant was not disposed of until his score was 128. The innings closed for 414, Mr. Shine and Martin finishing it off in the most brilliant manner. It almost goes without saying that Sussex, against such a laige total, only made a moderate score in the first innings—of late they have reserved their great performances for the inevitable follow on. The chief cause of the com parative failure of the team was the downfall of Newham and Murdoch. K . S. Ranjitsinhji was fortunately quite at home, and made 69, and Bean, Martin, Brann and Hartley did well, but Kent were nearly 200 runs ahead when the innings closed. Heavy rain interfered with the progress of the game towards the end of the day, so that there was not much probability that Sussex would bs able to make any great stand in their second innings. Unfor tunately Murdoch was unable to bat, and most of the eleven failed. K. S. Ranjitsinhji played a great innings under difficulties, but although the tail played up well the innings defeat could not be saved. K e n t . J. R. Mason, lbw, b F. Lancashire won by an innings and 63 runs. A t the beginning of the match, there was very little prospect of a large score for Lancashire, who went in first, and five wickets were down for 89. This collapse was almost as much due to the fault of the Lancashire batsmen as the excellence of the Notts’ bowling, for I’Anson and Mr. Hornby were both run out. In the meantime, Ward had played himself in, and when he was joined by Baker, runs were scored rapidly. The two professionals put on 140 while they were together, and by the time they were both out—they followed each other very closely—the Notts’ bowling was about worn out. The tail all made runs, and Notts had to face a total of 347. Mr. Jones was out soon, and directly afterwards a storm stopped play. A t luncheon the total was 54, Flowers and Gunn both not out 20, but no play was possible afterwards, owing to another storm. The wicket was all against batting on W ed nesday, and Notts, had no chance of saving the game. Gunn and Attewell batted particularly well. L an cash ire . Although Pougher went with the Leicestershire eleven to Derby he was unable to bowl, owing to an injured finger, and consequently when Derbyshire won the toss the outlook was very unpromising for the visitors. Nine of the Derbyshire men made double figures, and there were 23 extras. Bagshaw, who has lately been in very great form, made 121, Davidson nearly made his 100, and when stumps were drawn Storer was in a very fair position to add another remarkable score to his list, being notout 42. He only increased his total by 10 on Tuesday, and the total, which had been 389 for six wickets when play ended on Monday, was not greatly increased. Rain somewhat interfered with the end of the innings. Leicestershire began very badly indeed, and when rain put a stop to the game for the day three wickets had fallen for 30 runs, all to Davidson. On Wednes day, Pougher, despite his bad finger, made a hundred, and Mr. S. R. W right and Holland played fine cricket, but the follow on was not prevented. D e r b ysh ir e .
