Cricket 1896

22 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. F e b . 27, 1896. A N EW SOUTH W A L E S TEAM IN N EW ZE A LAN D . With the conclusion of the match against New Zealand on January 8th, at Auckland, the New South Wales brought their tour in New Zealand to a close. Though, as was generally expected, they were victorious in their matches with Canterbury, Otago, and Wellington the New Zealand team gave them a decisive beating. The Canterbury match proved the most interesting. The first innings of the local men produced 124, Lawrence playing a fine innings for 26, while the veteran Wilding batted vigorously for 33. Noonan and Hume were the only success ful bowlers, the former securing four wickets for 31 runs, and the latterfive for 34. The play on the second day was much faster and more interesting. The visitors set up a total of 194 against Canterbury’s 124; the home team in their second innings though stumps were drawn for the day had lost only two wickets for 150. New South Wales opened in- auspiciously with one wicket down for 18, the innings ultimately closed for 194, Poidevin’s batting for his 64 earned great admiration for style, effect, and finish. Though the Canterbury Second innings produced the fine total of 298. the visitors were equal to the occasion, and with the loss of four wickets put together 229, the number required to win. The features of the innings were the grand display of Walton for 122, and the second splendid batting exhibition on the part of Poidevin for 58, not out. The match against Octago was commenced on the 20th December, and is remarkable for the collapse of the visitors in their first innings, responding as they did to the 106 runs of the local team with the poor score of 96. Octago’s second venture produced 121 runs, but the New South Wales team were again equal to the occasion and got the necessary 132 runs with the loss of six wickets. In this match Callaway and Noonan were the most successful bowlers of the New South Wales team. On 26th December the Wellington match opened. In the early part of the innings their play was dis appointing, but thanks to Noonan, Ridge, Callan and Shea mainly. Wellington replied with 150, of these Warren made 50 and Holdship 25, Callaway securing seven wickets for 47 rui:s. The New South Wales team in their second venture put together the fine total of 239 Wellington was left with 269 to win, but thoroughly collapsed on a wicket which crumbling badly, suited Hume and Callaway admirably. These bowlers were simply unplayable. Callaway took seven ■wickets for 18 runs, and Hume three for 24. Towards the end of the tour the visitors met New Zealand at Auckland, and were defeated by 142. New Zealand won the toss, and going in scored 187. Callaway bowling with great effect, his average being seven wickets for 77 runs. New South Wales made 198, Poidevin contributing 54. In the second innings New Zealand batted up well, the innings realising 254. New South Wales made only a feeble stand in the second innings, and were disposed of for 101, Poidevin again heading the list with 38. New Zealand thus won by 142 runs. The last match of the tour was against Auckland, and resulted in a draw. The New South Wales team were very pleased with the hearty reception they met every where.
