Cricket 1896
J u l y 2, 1806. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 261 MIDDLESEX v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Old Traflord on June 29. 30, and July I. Middlesex won by four wickets. A t the close of the first day’s play Middlesex had distinctly the best of the game, for with eight wickets to fall thev were only 100 runs in arrear. Baker nearly made his hundred for Lancashire, and Ward. Sugg, Mr. Tindall, and I’Anson all batted well, but the b^st cricket of the day was shown by Mr. Stoddart and Mr. Hayman. Heavy rain fell during the night, and the rest of the Middlesex team did not make any great resistance to the bowling. In the Lancashire second innings several men did well, notably Briggs and Paul. Middlesex were set a hard task. Hearne and Mr. MacGregor had a few minutes batting before stumps were drawn, and on the following morning TTearne played so well that he soon made ‘29. Mr. Stoddart was in great form and made a hundred, and everything looked well for Middlesex. Nevertheless, Lancashire played up so well that before Middlesex could win six wickcts were down. It is very pleasant to see the Notts men regularly playing good cricket after their long period of reverses. Not only do the great batsmen of the team sc >re, but many of the others may be looked to for runs. Shrews bury has not been very fortunate of late, but he gener ally makes a pretty good score, and only wants to become really set once or twice to be able to astonish the bowlers opposed to him ; his presence in the team, even if he Wt-ro to continue to be unlucky iwhich is most unlikely) means a very great deal to the county. Against Kent, Mr. Jones. Gunn Mr. Dixou, Attewell, Mr. Wright, and uuttridge. all distinguished themselves, m >re especially the first two, and the total was fairly large for the Beckenham ground, which is trying to batsmen on accouut of the beautiful trees which surround it. Kent had not a very strong team, but Alec ^earne, Mr. Mason, and Mr. W eigill made good scores, and when the innings closed Kent were not hopelessly behind W ith the exception of Mr. W right and Attewell, who both played well, the Notts batsmen failed in the second innings. Nevertheless, at the close of the day Kent had to make 231 to win. Aided a little by wet, Alec Hearne and Mr. Mason began extremely well, and 115 was up before they were parted. At 186 six wickets were down and Mr. Mason had scored a hundred. After a splendid fight Notts just won. N o tts . First innings. Second innings. A. O.
