Cricket 1896

J une 11, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 211 YORKSHIRE v. SURREY. Played at Bradford on June9 and 10. Drawn. This match, which was arranged to take place at Sheffield, was transferred to Bradford, on account of a doubt as to the likelihood of getting a good wicket at the former town. A vast amount of interest was taken in the match, for neither team had been beaten during the season, but, unfortunately, rain came down heavily on the first day and prevented any play. On Tuesday, Yorkshire won the toss, and went in on a wicket which, though it helped the bowlers, was not an ideal bowler’s wicket. Moreover, at times, the Surrey men had to bowl with a wet ball. Eichardson was found to be ineffective, and soon gave place to Hayward, who did very well. The chief bowling honours, however, rest with Lohmann, who again showed how very useful he is to the Surrey eleven. Brown played a good innings. Mr. Jackson was splendidly caught close to the boundary by Brockwell. Mr. E. Smith proved himself worthy of his place in the team, and Moorhouse carried his bat for a valu able 27. Mr. Smith’s hitting was very fine. When Surrey went in, Abel and Brockwell showed that they could adapt themselves to altered circumstances, and for a time on the slower wicket were as difficult to beat as on a fast one. At the end of the day Suirey had made 80 for 3 wickets. Mr. Key and Hayward did well on Wednesday, and Lohmann made a use ful 14. In the end Surrey had a useful lead of 11 on the first innings. The Yorkshiremen played a bold and successful game in their second innings, and were able to declare. Surrey had no time to get the runs, and of course played for a draw, in which they were fairly easily successful. The match, as a test of the strength of the two teams, was a failure, owing to the wicket and the weather. Y orkshire . First innings. Second innings. F. S. The first innings of Gloucestershire was only re markable for the fine batting of Mr. Thomas, although half a dozen men made double figures. It was very soon seen that the Gloucestershire bowling was too weak to dispose of Warwickshire for a small score, and runs began to come readily. Mr. Bain bridge played excellent cricket, and afterwards I aw and Mr. Hill followed his example. But the stand of the innings was made by Law and Diver, and the bowling was then completely collared. Diver played beautiful cricket for his 53, and Lilley improved his chances of playing for England by making a splendid 121. Gloucestershire in a minority of 182, played for a draw, and triumphantly succeeded in their object, thanks to Mr. Townsend, Mr. Jessop and Mr. Thomas G loucestershire . First innings. W . G.
