In the second innings Kent made a fine start, but after Mold changed ends he was irresistible, and the total was small. Nevertheless, Lancashire had to fight very hard for victory. K e n t . Surrey won by six wickets. 26 Although this match is hardly as attractive as it used to be, the Notts team has shown signs of being much stronger than that of last year, and the recent performances of the Surrey X I. have been so good that it was not surprising that a large crowd assembled at Trent Bridge on W hit Monday. The batting strength of Surrey was again very apparent, for although the team had the unusual experience o f going through an innings without one of the side making a hundred, half a dozen men played such good cricket that the total was 327. This proved to be too great for Notts to approach, and they were obliged to follow on. Nevertheless, Shrewsbury played beautiful and perfect cricket for 57, and Flowers, who seems everlasting, made 41 in a very attractive manner. The Notts second innings was disappointing, except some wonderful batting by Mr. Jones, and Surrey had little difficulty in winning. S u rrey . Although they went in first, Leicestershire could make but little capital out of their advantage, al though Pougher and Holland played good cricket. Essex, on the other hand, made use of their opportu nities. Mr. Perrin showed clearly that his early performances were not flukes. Mr. Owen played one of his best innings, and the two bowlers, Mead and Pickett, hit with great boldness. Leicestershire began very badly in their second innings, but thanks to Pougher and Mr. Lorrimer they did well in the end, though the score was not large enough to prevent defeat. The feature of the Hampshire innings was the batting of Mr. Ward, who played such excellent cricket against the Australians in the Crystal Palace match. He made his first hundred for the county, and can congratulate himself in that it was an almost perfect innings. The tail showed up remarkably well. Against a total of 307, Derbyshire began in great style after losing Mr. W right for 24. Sugg, who went in first with him, an unusual pleasure, batted very finely, and Mr. Evershed also did great things. They led by 35 on the first innings, and as Hampshire did not do very well at their second attempt Derbyshire were left with 145 to win. H am psh ire . First innings. H. F.
