Cricket 1896
M ay 14, 189G. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 131 could not field well, he knew that he would soon be kicked out of the eleven; but in those days captains took infinitely more trouble to make a team field up than they do now, when almost anything will satisfy some of them. Many years ago fieldiDg was considered of as much importance as batting in school teams, and the boys used to have regular fielding practice. It is a pity it is not so now. “ Was not 1871 the year in which Mr. Grace made his first hundred on the Trent Bridge Ground ? ” “ Yes, I forgot to mention my ex perience when I played for Gloucester shire there. It was the first time W . G., then in his prime, had played there. They laid 20 to 1 against his getting 100 runs. H e took them up all round, and made 112, I think, second innings. All the factory hands struck work to see the match, and were eight and ten deep on the grass. Most of them had a ball in their pockets, and at lunch time struggled to bow l to him. One man bowled behind his back; a sort of jerk under his left arm, and every ball to a single stump. Grace slogged them all over the ground, and why someone was not killed I can’t say.” “ If the crowd you speak of were sit ting inside the ropes, the boundary must have been lessened ? ” “ I stood long leg in the match part of the time, but owing to the crowd being so near the wicket, I was almost short leg. I missed a high skying catch. The re mark of the crowd was: ‘ Well, h e ’aint fit to play in a country eleven, much less a county one.’ Shortly after, I was put deep m id-on, and caught a hard drive amid cheers, and remarks : ‘ He’ aint such a duffer after all.’ ” “ D id you ever play against any of the famous bowlers of the old days ? ” “ Once I was playing for Hampshire X X I I . v. United All England Eleven at Southampton. Tarrant bowled very fast, and I think Ellis was wicket-keeping. I twice hit Tarrant out of the Antelope ground to square leg. He then bowled a ball at m y head ; I just ducked and cleared it. I asked leave to leave my wicket, and went up to him, and asked if he did it on purpose. He said ‘ Y es.’ I said ‘ I don’t mind being bowled at fairly, but won’t stand being shot at.’ I referred to the wicket-keeper, and said ‘ Unless Tarrant apologises I will not go on.’ H e was asked to, refused, and had to leave the ground; but after two hours, he apolo gised and resumed play.” A paragraph in Cricket last week reminded Colonel Wallace of an anecdote. “ I was playing,” he said, “ at W ool w ich v. It.A. in 1861-2, or thereabouts, for my Regiment, the Rifles. I was bow ling lobs, and the batsman continually ran out at m e ; I told him I should stop his doing so. Catching the umpire asleep, who did not no-ball me, I threw the ball hard to the wicket keeper; the batsman missed hitting it and was stumped out. A discussion arising about the question, it was referred, to settle bets, to Bell’s Life, who decided the ball being in play and not no-balled the batsman was stumped out, but even if no-ball had been called, as a batsman can be run out off a no-ball, and he tried to make runs off it, he would be out as run out. The bets were paid. Clearly the decision was a good one, for you can run the batsman out at the bowler’s end if he leaves his ground when the ball is in play.” W . A. B e t t e s w o r t h .
