Cricket 1896
M a y 7 , 1896. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 125 M.C.C. & GROUND v. SUSSEX. First day. Played at Lord’s on May 6. Contrary to the usual custom, this match was commenced on a Wednesday. As the weather was decidedly cool, and but few people knew that a first-class match was being played at Lord’s, the number of spec tators was extremely small. In professionals, the M.C.C. team is strong, but Mr. Stoddart is the only famous amateur on the side. It was soon apparent, when Sussex went in to bat, that it would be difficult to get runs, for the bowlers were able to stick up the bats men considerably. C. B. Fry began well, and made a useful 23, but Marlow, Mr. Mur doch and Mr. Brann were all out just as they were getting set. K. S. Ranjitoinhji, how ever, though not seen at its best, was in long enough to make 30. Nobody else did much, except Killick, who made 21, not out, and the innings closed for 139. It was unfor tunate for Sussex that Gunn was opposed td them. He has over and over again mastered their bowlers, and once more he scored largely against them. ChattertDn was also in great form ; so that at the end of the day’s play the M.C.C. were leading very easily. S ussex Marlow, bAttewell... 12 C. B. Fry, b Hearne... 23 K . S. Among the Seniors at Oxford this year are several well known men, who, although they have missed their “ blue,” have proved them selves to be excellent cricketers. The best of them are B. D. Bannon, who had a great reputation at Tonbridge School, and may yet develop into a first-class bat: B. N. Bos- worth-Smith, the footballer; F. G. H. Clayton who made a splendid debut as a Freshman; W . Hartley, who has several times seemed almost certain of his “ blue; ” R. B. Porch, the Somerset amateur; and M. Y. Barlow, who has not yet fulfilled the promise which he showed at Harrow. In the Seniors’ match the teams were captained by Bosworth-Smith and Barlow. The former won the toss and went in with Clayton. Both batsmen very soon obtained a complete mastery over the bowling; they hit hard and often, and at one time Clayton made 8 fours in succession. In an hour the hundred went up ; in an hour and three-quarters Clayton reached the hundred, and in ten minutes less than two hours Bosworth-Smith did the same. Shortly after wards, becoming a little careless, both men were out, Clayton having scored 117 and Bosworth- Smith 107. There was very little fault to be found with either inuings. It seemed that Mr. Barlow’s side were in for a terribly long time of fielding, but only two other batsmen made a great stand. They were K. A. Wood ward (52) and H. D. Corbet 69 not out, and although their runs were' scored when the bowlers seemed tired, they deserve very great credit for their innings. If the easiness of the wicket is taken into consideration Hartley, who took eight wickets for 150, must be held to have bowled with success. The total was 405. Mr. Barlow’s side, perhaps tired by their day’s fielding, began badly on Tuesday, and four wickets had fallen for 110. On the following day Clayton was again in great form, and Bannon did himself justice, with the result that the innings was closed. B. N. Boswobtii-Smith’s Side. First Innings. Second Innings. B. N.
