Cricket 1896

M a y 7, 1896. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 119^ ©omsfpon&atce. To the Editor of C r ic k e t . S ir , The writer and compiler of the interesting articles and statistics in Cricket beneath the title of “ Between the Innings, has, on two occasions, made reference to the almost impos sibility of the great scoring match, Ulster v. Macquaire, at Moore Park, Sydney, to have been played. I based my statement to the Sportsman in February of this year, solely upon the fact that Mr. F. J. Ironside, in his recent book, “ World of Cricket,” definitely declared that he copied the score from the original score sheet. I was supported in my theory by Mr. A. G. Guillemard, the old Rugby boy who was in Australia in 1877, and who not only saw the score of the match in a Sydney contemporary, but he (Mr. Guillemard) was responsible for the reproduction of the score in the subsequent yearly issue of John Lillywhite’s Cricketers' Companion. I at once communicated direct to Mr. F. J. Ironside, Cromwell House, Moore Park, Sydney, asking for further proof. By this morning’s mail, I have received Ironside’s reply, and it will be interesting to cricket enthusiasts if I give ipsissima verba penned to me by Mr. F. J. Ironside:— “ Thanks for your letter, and a copy of the Sportsman containing your letter anent the Ulster v. Macquaire match. This match has cropped up again in the Colonies, and I have given evidence so conclusive that I am not likely to hear anything more of, as was asserted, *of the match being played in some back parlour.’ ” Thus writes Mr. Ironside under date of March 25th, 1896, but it will be observed that Mr. Ironside omits to supply the evidence. I fear now the whole affair is a myth. Believe me, Yours faithfully, ALFRED J. GASTON. D it c h l in o R ise , B r ig h t o n , May 1th, 1896.
