Cricket 1896
102 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A pril 30, 1896. included, or Howell or Charles McLeod have been brought instead of the former. It was not, it seems, obligatory that Turner should catch the Cuzco; and the committee of the team certainly gave him an ample margin of time when they offered him the choice of either of the next two steamers. Albeit Trott is not a member of the team at all, and though he will assuredly be played sometimes, is scarcely likely to get a regular place in it. Harry Trott is to be captain, and Giffen and Gregory are associated with him as the Match Committee. Giffen’s sciatica is quite cured ; this is good news, and I for one heartily hope that the great George will disprove the assertions of those who say—some regretfully, a few almost gleefully—that he is going down hill. I shall not be surprised to see more than one century from his bat this season, >n spite of the sinister predictions. There is some talk of Harry’s coming over to qualify for an English county. He is somewhat old for that—I understand that he is nearer forty than thirty, though I don’t know the exact date of his birth— but if his last season Australian form is Lis true form, there are several counties which would be considerably the stronger for his help.—J.N.P. The following amusing verses were published in the Adelaide Observer of March 21. They are obviously written by an Englishman. ’Twixt Giffen and Grace Give the Doctor first place— For that’s how all cricketers grade ’em ; Then Jackson and Abel We’ll hear by the cable Will walk over Donnan and Graham. Though Darling and Hill May hit with a will, And knock up a good many fourers, Yet Stoddart and Ward Will run o’er the sward Till they very much tire the scorers. Young Syd will not fail, For Frank I ’ll go bail, The reason he soon will make plain ; But MacLaren and Brown Have won more renown, And will prove it on meeting again. There’s “ William” and Trott, Not the worst of each lot, But the former’s a very bigg Gunn, Sir ; And Trumble at slip Gathers many a tip, Yet Lohmann’s his daddy at that, Sir. A smartman is Kelly, But smarter is Lilley, And that he will show at the stumps ; Or if you like Johns As he the glove dons, Yet Storer can “ take ” however it bumps. Then Eady and Jones May damage some bones On a pitch that’s anyway wicked. But “ Tom,” with friend Mold, Of the Lancashire fold, Will pitch ’em right into the wicket. McKibben and Turner Are good ’uns to turn ’er, But what about Peel and young Townsend, And if there’s a need We’ve always got Mead, To help to accomplish the game’s end. But with some pluck, And all the luck, You may beat the English team, For to do it fair On a wicket square You surely will never dream. Now that’ s enough, ’Tis rather rough, So here’s a sentiment true— Your best you do, Then perhaps I ’ll rue The “ borack” I ’ve given to you. ADDISCOMBE v.
