Cricket 1895
92 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p r il 25, 1895. The match card of the D u l w ic h C.C. for the present season consists of 65 fixtures, including matches against most of the pro minent suburban clubs, viz., Surrey Club and Ground, Croydon, Bromley, Plaistow, Beddington, Gravesend, Clapton, Hornsey, Hampton Wick, etc. In addition to these, matches have been arranged with Sutton, Private Banks, and St. Thomas’s Hospital, these fixtures now appearing for the first time on the card. The season opens on Saturday 27th, with home-and-home matches against Plaistow, and closes on September 14th with a club match, over 30 v. under 30. Two elevens are played every Saturday, and up to the middle of July, as many as three teams will be in evidence each week. After the successes of previous years, in place of a tour, the committee have again decided to hold a cricket week at Dulwich. This time it will be in August, instead of September, and the opposing club will be the Erratics, Pallings- wick, Gravesend, Vampires F.C., Clapton, and Surrey Club and Ground, and it will only require fine weather to ensure a pleasant, and it is to be hoped a successful campaign. Owing to the care and skilful attention of Terry, the groundman, at the end of last season, the turf is in finer condition than ever, and with a normal spring, we anticipate a plentiful supply of good wickets. The addition of a luncheon room to the Pavillion is under con sideration, and when carried out, will prove an inestimable boon to members and friends. Rumours of the new additions to the club, which are numerous, and the Committee are hopeful of at least unearthing that rara avis of suburban clubs, a good and smart stumper. The eleven will depend chiefly for its strength on the “ old crocks,” who rendered such splendid service in 1894, and, judging from their present form in the nets, will prove as reliable as ever. Although report has it that that sterling batsman, F. H. Gillingham will not play so regularly as last year, it is hoped that the club will have his invaluable assistance in our chief fixtures. The highly esteemed Hon. Sec., Ormsby Jones, 7, Whitehall Gardens, S.W., again undertakes the onerous duties of that position, and under his watchful eye and experienced guidance there is every reason to predict another pleasant and successful season.
