Cricket 1895
A p r il 25, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 85 that Eady (fast right) and Bingham (medium left) bowled so well with a wet hall, and the •catches were taken, scarcely a mistake being made in the field. As there were further indications of rain, stumps were drawn. F o u r t h D a y .— S a t u r d a y , M a r c h 1 6 . The weather was dull, cold, and cheerless, the sun being quite obscured by lowering 'clouds. The wicket at noon, owing to shower during the morning, was very wet, and it was decided to postpone play till after luncheon. At 2.30 the pitch was sufficiently dried to begin, Gatehouse and Eady appearing first to the bowling of Richardson and Peel. Runs came rapidly from both ends, especially from the left-hander. Brockwell relieved Richardson, who had not attempted to bowl his full pace, owing to the slippery nature of the turf, and soon had Gatehouse caught at extra mid-off. One for 51. Mr. Ford shortly afterwards relieving Peel, soon caught Eady off his own bowling. Eady’s thirty-five was very well obtained ; he is looked upon as the best bowler and batsman in Tasmania, and during the present match quite justified the high opinions formed of him. He stands well over six feet, and is very active. He bowls fast with a high delivery, having an excellent command of the ball, which his performance in the rain during the innings of the Eleven proved, whilst in batting he makes the most of his height when playing forward, and hits well all round the wicket. In the event of an Australian team visiting England during ’ 96, the selectors of the side would do well to secure such a fine, promising all-round cricketer. Howe, a left hander, played a good innings for fifty-one not out, but towards the close of the day’s play the ball became so wet from the moisture on the grass that a lot of loose deliveries were sent down through the bowlers being unable to obtain a good hold of it. When six o’clock was reached thirteen wickets had fallen for 189 runs, the match thus being left drawn. Mr. Ford came out best inbowling by securing nine wickets for 56 runs. He seldom has had an opportunity of bowling when playing against odds. Brockwell secured the other four wickets for 50 runs. It is to be regretted that such wet weather has marred the visit of the Eleven, as the financial success of the fixture suffered as well as preventing either side having a chance of showing their true abilities, whilst the beautiful scenery for which Hobart is famous could not be viewed by the team. On the day following, Sunday, March 17th, a visit was made to the Fern Tree Bower, close to the base of Mount Wellington, but im mediately we arrived there rain began to fall heavily, causing us to seek .shelter in r neighbouring hostelry. Mount Wellington, which towers above, was enveloped in clouds, but in our drive of four miles back to Hobart, we witnessed some beautiful scenery from the hill sides, the waters of the harbour showin; to advantage below.
